White House Justifies
American Aid to Egypt
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
White House, in deliberating on
the decision to resume aid to
Egypt, considered whether it
would jeopardize regional peace
and concluded that the new poli
cy would preserve stability, a
White House official informed
Sen. Hugh Scott, Pennsylvania
Republican.
R. W. Komer, Deputy Special
Assistant to President Johnson
for national security affairs,
wrote Sen. Scott that “We have
not let Egypt or other Arab
countries infer from our policy
that their attitude toward Eng-

land, Israel and other pro- West
ern governments in the Near
East was a matter of indifference
to us.” Sen. Scott had told the
White House this would be indi
cated if aid to Egypt were re
sumed.
Mr. Komer said the situation
was “quite the contrary. We have
also carefully considered whether
U. S. aid to Egypt of the sort we
contemplate would significantly
add to the likelihood of hostilities
in the area. Taking into account
all the complex factors bearing
on such question, we believe that
our present policy is that best
calculated to preserve peace and
stability in the Near East.”
“I can further assure you that
we remain alert to every reason
able opportunity to help relax
tensions and bring about a re
duction in the arms race,” the
White House official said. He
was hopeful that the new aid
agreement with Egypt would
contribute toward these goals.
He noted that the duration and
terms of the new agreement
would be “significantly different
from those of past agreements.”
He revealed that President
Johnson, "after carefully consid
ering all the pros and cons”
authtorized new aid for Egypt “on
the strong recommendation of the
Secretary of State that it would
serve the national interest to do
so if the terms were satisfactory.”

Protests Mount Against
Bar of Award to Rabbi
BOSTON (JTA)—Protests con
tinued to mount over the action
of a Boston American Legion post
in withdrawing a Good Govern
ment award to a Boston rabbi be
cause he was a sponsor of the
November 27 march in Washing
ton protesting United States In
volvement in the Viet Nam war.
The Crosscup-Pishon Legion
post originally had planned to
present the award to Rabbi Ro
land B. Gittelsohn, former na
tional chaplain of the Jewish War
Veterans of America, Richard
Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of
Boston, and Bishop Phelps Stokes
Jr. of the Episcopal Diocese of
Massachusetts. The awards were
scheduled for presentation at a
banquet on January 28.
When the post’s withdrawal be
came known. Bishop Stokes no
tified the post he would not ac
cept it. However, Cardinal Cush
ing said he would accept the
honor, declaring that the dispute
was an American Legion affair
and “has nothing to do with me.”
William Curran, post comman
der, said that he believed the
rabbi “has a right to do what he
wants. This is just a matter of
policy. We are supporting the na
tional policy of the American Le
gion, which has supported our
United States national policy.”
and groups. This right must be
fully protected. Only a totalitar
ian government prohibits such
dissension."
The statement added that it was
“reprehensible” for the Legion
post to seek "to cast a shadow on
the loyalty and integrity of a dis
tinguished rabbi. Such action vio
lates the spirit of free inquiry
which undergirds America.”

Rabbi Gittelsohn, who said he
did not take part in the march
because it was staged on the Jew
ish Sabbath, criticized the post’s
action. He said: “The claim that
patriotism at all times demands
an uncritical acceptance of Gov
ernment policy is a characteristic
of dictatorship, not democracy.”
He declared that he had spoken
against Un ; ted States policy in
Viet Nam as “an individual, a
member of the Jewish Commun
ity. and a spiritual leader."
A group of Catholic, Protestant
and Jewish clergymen issued a
statement here criticizing the
post’s action. The statement said
that "no organization, govern
ment or private citizen has the

icans should think. Even high
