BEHIND UN SCENES — by David Horowitz
Nathan’s Flight for World Peace
Talks of Method and Madness
UNITED NATIONS (WUP) —
Except for David Ben-Gurion’s
solemn observation about the
contribution to peace Abie S.
Nathan made in his solo flight to
Egypt, most of the talk about it
centered on the sense of his ad-

venture.
Was the flight sheer madness
of a publicity-seeking extrovert
with a Madison-Avenue gimmick
in his brain? Or was there a
genuine thought-out method to
focus the eyes of the Middle
East and the entire world on the*
quest for peace at the historic
cross-roads of war?
It is interesting to note that
here at the UN among delegates
and officials there was no tend
ency to belittle Nathan’s venture.
It is further interesting to note
that he was received by the UAH
authorities with far more respect
than one had gathered from some
of the comments in certain sec
tions of the Israeli press. Verily,
no man is a prophet in his own
country, and yet the popular ac
claim Abie received on his re
turn showed clearly that the Is
raeli masses eagerly embraced his
venture as the embodiment of
their deep aspirations for peace
with their intransigent neighbors.
There were some who express
ed the view that his resort to an
individual initiative made his
gesture a kind of vaudeville show
to dramatize Abie instead of Is
rael. But this interpretation is
obviously wrong, for had he even
remotely flown with even a shad-
of of suspicion of governmental
collusion, he most certainly
would have been arrested and

However, by having flown as
an individual, by having dropped
in as a guest in trouble with his
plane, by having sought sanc
tuary in the spirit of a friendly
"invasion,” he compelled the au
thorities to display their tradi
tional Islamic hospitality — to
dine and wine him, to refuel his
plane and to service it and to
-send him home if not with their
blessings at least with their ad
miration.
One thing is certain: then the
UAH authorities - - did not 'rid
icule him or belittle him. Instead,
the Governor of Port Said en
gaged him in a serious ‘ peace
parley” which, it must he said,
the Israeli statesmen with all the
paraphernalia of diplomacy had
failed to achieve even at the
round tables here at the United
Nations. There was actually a
peace talk. Of course, the Gov
ernor repeated—he could not do
otherwise — his Government’s
position that peace is up to Is
rael and Israeli initiative, but he
stated this not in the furious ac
cents of a rabid Ahmad Shukairy
but in the simple and friendly
cordiality that marks the simple
conversation of one man with
another.
It was not the Egyptians who
likened Nathan’s flight to that of
a mad Hudolf Hess who flow to
England in an attempt to subvert
British resistance to Hitler’s sui
cidal aggression.
True, some segments of the
Arab press—to cover their own
position — took a side-swipe or
two at this orbit for sanity and
reason, but leaders on both sides
refrained from any derogatory
comments — and for this they
should be praised. Knowing that
they have failed in their states
manship to attain the peace that
people on both sides seek so ferv
ently, they showed no inclina
tion to ridicule any initiative by
a private citizen who, as it turns
out, represents the peoples on
both sides more than the states
men do.
Abie S. Nathan did what he
had to do, what his heart and
mind impelled him to do, and he
did it in the only way he knew
how by wings which circum
vent the tortuous path of di
plomacy to a direct, straight-
from-thc-shoulder approach
which has made its own contri
bution to the quest for peace, a
quest which must never be aban
doned.
Here at the UN, the workshop
for peace, the name of Abie S.
Nathan ranks very high He has
