From a Fellow Professional
Tribute to Cantor
Joseph Schwartzman
Cantor Schwartzman has stepped down from the important post
he has filled at Congregation Ahavath Achim in Atlanta for
more than a quarter centery. His service to the synagogue will
be the focus of a public reception tendered him by Ahavath
Achim members and friends in the community on Sunday, April
24. This tribute comes unsolicited from a fellow professional
cantor in Atlanta.

A tribute, truly an acknow
ledgement of thanks and respect,
must go to a master of Jewish
music, a well known colleague—
Cantor Joseph Schwartzman.
1 write these lines with a sin
cere respect and humbleness to a
man who has dedicated his en
tire life to a divine calling in the
positive service of Almighty G-d.

of the highest level of Jewish try, for the past 26 years, Cantor

man to G-d and from man to

ing to Atlanta Jewry for the past
26 years, has a background
known only to a very few, not
only professionally, but also his
vast undertakings behind the
scenes, in the privacy of his own
mind and heart.
One of the greatest highlights
I came upon in his dedicated life
of service was something that
shook me into recognizing the
stature of this messenger of G-d.
A few years after Cantor
Schwartzman came to this coun
try and was serving Congregation
B’nai Yitzchok in New York, the
famous Cantor—Aryeh Leib Rut-
man left the Hunts Point Jewish
Center of the Bronx. The Cantor
that was engaged to fill this va
cancy of such a giant of Chaz-
zanuth was none other than Jos
eph Schwartzman.
To best portray this enormous
acknowledgement of the compe
tence of a “Sheliach Tzibur” (a
deputy of the people), I’d like to
quote the words of Rabbi Max
Felshin, which the Rabbi deliver
ed in honor of Rutman; “In Odes
sa, as a young man, when you
sang, Rasumne, Minkowsky, Sir
ota and Maisels, the greatest Can
tors of all times, stood in wrapt
wonder and silent awe, feeling
instinctively that you were the
master of masters; that like unto
you, never did nor ever will
arise a mouthpiece of song in Is
rael.”
To be chosen to fill the pulpit
of such a man is recognition in
itself of the highest calibre!!
The Cantor's private life is one
of exemplary service to those in
need through means and methods
almost forgotten by our people in
recent years. Many a Cantor
throughout this country is grate
ful to this man for the assistance
that was received in their time
of need. Among his many and
varied endeavors on behalf of
philanthropic and charitable or
ganizations. two deserve special
mention: While serving in Pitts
burgh, Pennsylvania — Cantor
Schwartzman was presideni of
the Chesed. Shel Ernes — taking
care of burials, one of the great
mitzvot of the Torah—as well as
being part of Lee hem Anij/im
(bread for the poor) which en
abled the righteous to deliver as
sorted foods to families in need.
Both of these endeavors are con
sidered, by our Holy Torah, to be
