The U. S. Naval Reserve Train
ing Center in Macon has an
nounced the promotion of Lt.
Comdr. Marvin J. Becker, Macon,
to commander in the Reserve.
Becker is commanding officer of
the US. Naval Reserve Surface
Division 6-12 (L).
Miss Barbara Jane Cohen,
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Harry
L. Cohen of Atlanta, was to be
honored for outstanding achieve
ment at the Universitv of Michi
gan’s 43rd Annual Honors Con
vocation on April 1. Miss Cohen
is a sophomore at the universitv.

the University of Missouri is
spend’ng the spring holidays in
Atlanta with her mother, Mrs.
Ida S. Matz.
Eddie Gotlieb, Duke Univer
sity student, is spending spring
vacation in Atlanta with his
mother, Mrs. Sam Gotlieb. Ed

Mr. and Mrs. Murray M. Simon
of Atlanta have returned from
Charleston where they attended
the capping exercises at the Med
ical State College, where their
granddaughter, Carla Jean Bull-
winkle, was capped. Carla Jean
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Marion Bulwinkle. Mr. and Mrs.
Simon also visited Tallahassee to
attend the Florida State Univer
sity Circus. Their grandson, Gene
Beryl Murray, son of Louise Mur
ray, attends FSU.
Atlanta Symphony
List Comiuctors
For Next Season
For the first time in its
twenty-one year history the At
lanta Symphony Orchestra will
be conducted by a series of
famous guest conductors for the
1966-67 subscription series.
Henry Sopkin, who founded
the orchestra in 1945, retires from
♦he podium he has commanded
for over two decades on April 6.
Robert Shaw will follow him in
the post of music director and
conductor beginning in the 1967-
68 season.
In the interim guest conductors
will include maestros of several
of the nation’s finest orchestras;
Donald Johanos of Dallas, Vladi
mir Golschmann of Denver, Izler
Solomon of Indianapolis. Milton
Katims of Seattle along with Mor
ton Gould, Jose Iturbi, Boris
Goldovsky and Alfred Wallen
stein.
Joan Sutherland opens the
season October 20 under the
baton of her husband Richard
Bonynge. Other assisting artists
include Iturbi, Shmuel Ashken-
asi, Jeanne-Marie Darre, Edith
Peinemann, Ronald Turini, Julius
Katchen. and the winner of the
Van Cliburn Competition which
will be held in October.
Saul Bat Mitzvah
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Saul of
Atlanta cordially invite relatives
and friends to attend the Bat
Mitzvah of their daughter Pam
at 8:15 p. m. Friday, April 1, at
