serve salad meals—Caesar salads,
cream-cheese and fruit salads, or
even tuna-fish salad, are not avail

Financially, it would be almost
worthwhile to come to the U. S.
just to send four children through
fiee high school, but more impor
tant (we hope our children will be
understanding) is the thought of
schools where children get out at
reasonable hours — say three or
four—instead of at twelve and one,
as in Israel.
Holitlaijs. Thanksgiving and the
Fourth of July are both easily
understandable and acceptable,
and thus the kind of holiday that
we should be able to celebrate
again wholeheartedly. Labor Day,
too. may make even more sense
to someone from a labor state like
Israel than it does to many Amer
icans to whom the whole organized
labor movement is just part of the
“establishment." St. Valentine's
Day and Halloween are harder to
identify with, having vaguely re
ligious—or pagan—overtones. But
it is mostly the Christmas hysteria
that we are reluctant to reenter.
We remember it as a painful per
iod • of Jew ish , ambivalence, de
fenses. and apologia. Don't get us
wrong—we have nothing against
Christmas for Christians. In fact,
we feel quite comfortable in Israel
as we help Christian friends—UN
experts, government consultants,
etc.—decorate their trees (provided
free bv the Jewish National Fund),
surprise their children with gifts,
and in general get some pleasure
from then holiday a long way from
home and family. But we do it
