52 Years in Masonry
One of Alabama’s most prominent figures in Masonry, Samuel B.
Israel, was honored Sunday, March 20, at the West Blocton Lodge, AF
and M, 474, in a ceremony attended by Grand Lodge Officers and some
250 guests from Alabama, Georgia and states as distant as Pennsylvania.
Dr. D. P. Culp, President of Alabama College, Montevallo, delivered
the principal address, and paid tribute to Mr. Israel for having devoted
57 years to Masonic Lodge work and for his inspiring leadership in his
hometown.
Mr. Israel is 81 and a West Blocton merchant. He has lived in the
same small town for 76 years, having come with his parents to the
Alabama mining community when just a child. He is a widower and the
father of two children, both of whom were present for the occasion,
along with some 30 other relatives, including a sister, Mrs. Joe Sachs,
Bessemer, Alabama. Mr. Israel’s children are: Elmo Ellis, General
Manager of WSB-AM-FM-Atlanta,. and Mrs. Bernerd Caplan, wife of a
Philadelphia physician. Another son, no longer living, was known pro
fessionally as Don Frank and was a radio personality of WCAU and
WPEN, Philadelphio. Mr. Israel’s nephew is the prominent NBC sports
announcer, Mel Allen.
In the ceremony at the West Blocton Lodge, speakers from the
Grand Lodge and the local lodge lauded Mr. Israel as a Jewish citizen
who loved people of all religions and races, and in turn is loved, re
spected and admired by all who know him. A portrait of Mr. Israel was
unveiled during the cremony. It will hang permanently in the Lodge
Hall. The only other portrait in the hall is that of George Washington.
In responding to the tributes, Mr. Israel thanked his friends and
fellow Lodge members for "giving flowers to the living.’’ He called the
occasion one of the finest moments in his life.
During his many years as a Mason, Mr. Israel has given instructions
to more than 300 Lodge members advancing through degrees of the
order. He is an eloquent Masonic lecturer and has spoken at Lodges
throughout Alabama. He has also delivered the Masonic burial oration
at more than 50 funerals. In 1959 the West Blocton Lodge honored Mr.
Israel with another open meeting at which he was saluted for having
served the Masonic Order for a half-century. On that occasion he was
presnted a diamond Masonic pin.
