themselves is an index to their
sense of balance. The resorts
built by Jews are for the most
part lively and attractive. They
provide an opportunity for
change and relaxation and dis
traction—all of which are
needed bv people who work
hard.
And. although the mambo
crowd looks rather frivolous
when you watch it in the mass
when you talk to each one in
dividually you find that mod
of them are wholesome, sensi
tive and warm-hearted people.
Before long, grandparents, still
breathing heavy from those
Latin-American gyrations, will
be showing you pictures of
their grandchildren and telling
you how much nachas they get
from them.
At Jewish resorts drinking
is relatively moderate and im
morality is down to a mini
mum.
Miami Beach has become
known as the start-off city for
all philanthropic drives The
generosity built into Jewish
hearts shines in Miami Beach
as does the sun.
One person who loved Miami
Beach was the late Rabbi
Stephen Wise. Two of his dis
ciples. Rabbi IrVing Lehrman
and Rabbi Leon Kronish. have
built two of the many synago
gues there. And they are
probably the only shuls in the
country where' often it's stand
ing-room only. Over in Miami
Rabbi Joseph Narot gets a gotxl
response, too. to his interpre
tation of Judaism, which many
residents and vacationers en
joy almost as much as the good
food and the cozy accomoda
tions for which the area is
famous.
It has become as fashionable
in some parts to sneer at
Miami as it is in others to
patronize it.
Personally, 1 like Miami, and
I think it is a monument not
to Jewish insecurity but to
Jewish heartiness. Bravo to a
people which, by and large, has
adhered to our religion’s be
hest to mingle celebration with
celebration.
Miami Beach now has a new
mayor. Elliot Roosevelt. What
Rooseveltism represents ac
cords with what Judaism has
taught; that one should feel
good as well as do good.
The reason I cavilled a bit
at Time Magazine's little de
murrer in the midst of its tri
bute to the Jews is that I am a
little grumpy these days, a
little edgy about little things
which I tend to magnify. What
I need, I think, is a little
breather in Miami. Then, like
the other lucky ones who live
or go there. I would feel better
After killing some time pleas
antly down there, I would be
ready to say Vive Time.
