“Professor Gershom Scholem,
professor of Jewish Mysticism at
the Hebrew University in Jeru
salem, who presently serves as
visiting professor at the Hebrew
Union College in Cincinnati, will
address the 20th Annual Meeting
of the Atlanta Bureau of
Jewish Education on Thursday,
April 21, at 8:00 p.m. at the
Atlanta Jewish Community
Center. Dr. Irving L. Green
berg, president of the Bureau,
said Professor Scholem, who also
serves as vice president of the
Israel National Academy of Sci
ences and Humanities, is one of
the world’s majt eminent scho
lars whose interpretations of the
Kabbalah have thrown an en
tirely new light on post-Biblical
Jewish thought.
Professor Scholem is the .au
thor of numerous works in
Hebrew, English, and German on
Jewish Mysticism, the Talmudic
Tradition, and the symbolism of
the Kabbalah. An article entitled
“The Golem of Prague and the
Golem of Rehovoth” which ap
peared in the January issue of
“Commentary” relates that re
cently, when Israel set-up its
first computer system at the
Weizman Institute, Professor
Scholem was asked to deliver the
installation address and to pro
pose a Hebrew term for the new
apparatus. On the basis of cer
tain conceptual similarities,
Professor Scholem dubbed the
new machine “Golem,” pointing
out that this was the name for
the legendary medieval robot
which was constructed by the
famous Rabbi Loew of Prague,
an eminent scholar and mystic,
for the purpose of helping the
Jews in numerous ways and
of the Camp, Norman Simon, as
sistant director of the camp and
Marvin Slotin, outdoor education
chairman for the school, have co
ordinated science, Hebrew, lang
uage arts, music, art and a phys
ical fitness program.
They will be assisted by the
Academy teachers, Jacob Mam-
ane, Eli Schuck, Mort Giniger,
Miss Gayle Grossman, Miss Andy
Perleman, Miss Sybil Horowitz,
and Harvey Kasow.
The program will start each
morning at 7:30 a. m. until 9:00
p. m. in the evening. Two par
ents are assisting the staff dur
ing meal time each day. The staff
and students are looking forward
to a successful I960 Outdoor Ed
ucation week.
PROF. SCHOLEM
especially for defending them
against attackers. Just as the
Golem performed valuable tasks
so long as he was controlled
properly, but developed into a
destructive force when he
threatened to outgrow his mas
ter’s power, the computer, Pro
fessor Scholem indicated, can be
of immeasurable assistance and,
at the same time, “may have a
dangerous tendency to outgrow
his master’s control and develop
destructive potentialities."
On the same occasion, Pro
fessor Scholem mentioned that
the origin of the controversial
expression “God Is Dead” can
be traced back to a cabalistic
source.
Dr. Greenberg indicated that
the business portion of the meet
ing will be reduced to a bare
minimum in order to leave
ample time for the distinguished
guest to present his ideas and
for the audience to have an
opportunity to meet this emin
ent scholar.
