Of Can lor Schwartzman
Members of Ahavath Achim
Congrega^on, joined by many
representatives from the Jewish
community at large, will gather
Sunday, April 24, at the Synago
gue to bid farewell formally to
Cantor Joseph Schwartzman.
From 3 to 5 p.m., a reception
will be tendered in his honor
under the chairmanship of David
Alterman. Rabbi Harry Epstein,
President Harry Lane Segal,
Rabbi Raphael Gold, Cantor
Isaac Goodiriend and other
dignitaries of the Congregation
will be on hand for the festivi
ties.
Samuel Rosenbaum, executive
vice president of the Cantors
Assembly of America, has hailed
the forthcoming testimonial
honoring the retirement of Can
tor Schwartzman as “a note
worthy achievement, pointing
up a new and most welcome
trend in American synagogue
life—that congregations are be
coming increasingly aware of
the benefit from long associa
tions with those men who serve
their spiritual needs.”
This celebration has even more
meaning, Mr. Rosenbaum con
tinued, in his letter to Mr.
Alterman "for the honor you
extend to your Hazzan Schwartz
man will also underline the im
portance of one of the loftiest
callings that man can have on
earth; to lead his fellowman in
prayer and to direct him in the
search for eternal truths. In the
pursuit of this calling, Joseph
Schwartzman has given it dign
ity, respect and stature.”
Cantor Schwartzman began
his career at the tender age of
eight as soloist in the mam
synagogue choir of Bender,
Bessarabia, Russia. Once he
came to America, he found no
difficulty in securing profession
al engagements, continuing his
vocal education and broadening
his cantorial talent. It was at a
Z.O.A. convention in Pittsburgh
in 1940 that he came to the
attention of Hyman Jacobs of
Atlanta, and eventually was en
gaged for Atlanta.
