Louis Nizer, the famous law
yer was standing in the temple,
and he was being asked his ideas
concerning law and Judaism. In
the course of his
comments he re
marked: “Some
one once said
that the worst
indigestion oomes/
from having to*
eat your own
words.”
Not indigestion,
but exhilaration
will come to any
person who consumes Mr. Nizer’s
words. They are so flavorful of
wisdom and common sense that
the are a "mchyeh.”
What was Mr. Nizer doing in
the temple? He was participating
in as exciting a series of dialogues
that ever took place in this coun
try. His fellow-conversationalist
was Rabbi William Berkowitz, of
Manhattan’s Congregation B’nai
Jeshurun. In what must be ap
praised as one of the most glit
tering adult education series
ever, the rabbi staged a dozen
dialogues with some of the
world’s outstanding personages.
Louis Nizer told the rabbi and
the audience why he is “happy”
being Jewish. Richard Tucker ex
plained why he would rather not
wear a cross in one of his operatic
roles. Ogden Reid, once our am
bassador to Israel, conveyed his
fascination with Israel, and his
wife told how she flunked a He-

brew quiz given her by Ben-Gur-
ion. Dr. Nahum Goldmann ex
pressed his reaction to the word,
philanthropy. Dr. Horace Kallen
defended progressive education
against its many “malicious at
tacks.’’ Congressman Emanuel
Celler recalled how he had de
fined sechel to the late Pres.
Kennedy.
In another dialogue Fannie
Hurst told of the change that has
overcome her between the time
when she winced at the word
Jew and the time when she
straightened up with pride at the
same syllable. The late Rabbi
Walter Plaut gave a glow-by-
glow account of “freedom riding.”
Dr. Bertram Korn, the famed
rabbi-historian, relayed the story
of how Abraham Lincoln once
chided a rabbi for letting some
one else pray for him. Avraham
Harman, the Israeli ambassador,
electrified everyone with ac
counts of Israel’s aspirations. Dr.
Selman Waksman described his
effort at translating a Hebrew
book into English. Judge Mich
ael Musmanno commented on the
Eichmann trial.
All of these vivid discussions
have been made available to us
by the congregation in a volume
called “Heritage and Hope.” The
president of the shul, Charles H.
Silver, proudly calls these dia
logues examples of “searching for
God in the world about us.” We
are indebted to the congregation
for a “most digestible” book.

JWB has shared in the UJA ef
fort by encouraging significant
numbers of lay and professional
leaders to contribute to UJA and
thus to actively share in its res

Edwin Rosenberg, chairman of
the executive committee of the
United Jewish Appeal of Greater
New York, received the citation
on behalf of UJA from JWB
President Louis Stem.
Earlier in the day, Isaac Bash-
evis Singer, author of “The
Slave"’ and other books, told the
JWB delegates that “there are an
infinite number of universes and
even here, on this earth, powers
exist of which we have no ink
ling, both stronger and weaker
than man. This allows for the
possibility of angels, devils, and
other beings which are and will
remain forever unnamed.”
At an early age, the author
said, “God was for me an eternal
belle lettrist. His main attribute
was creativity and what He cre
ated was made of the same stuff
as He and shared His desire to
create again. Each atom, each
molecule, had creative needs and
possibilities.
“God creates continuously and
continuous creation is man’s des
tiny, too. God, like the artist, is
free. His laws are aesthetic and
ethical and therefore bound to
change. Beauty is their purpose.
God’s fantasy is their limit. I
once called God a struggling
artist.”
