The Jewish New Year has
never been merely a calendar
mark. From Bible times it has
been associ
ated with
solem n i t y
and awe. Un
like the secu
lar New Year
which is sym-
b o 1 i z e d by
revelry and
gaiety, our
Rosh Hashana is a time of re
flection and rededication. It is
a sacred season of remem
brance of things past.
Quite contrary to any other
faith we Jews convene our
selves in the House of G-d to
welcome the New Year with
the self-examination of our
past in order to build a newer
and worthier life for the spiri
tual growth and perfection, to
strive for the ennoblement of
our human character.
As we ponder the ills of the
world, the problems and
troubles of many nations and
peoples, and the cause thereof,
we come to realize that the
spiritual moral value of re
ligion is loosening its strength.
To regain that spiritual value
we must recur to these Holy
Days. Because Rosh Hashana is
the magnificent edifice of our
people that has never lost faith
in man. It is that faith that en
ables man to ascend the high
peaks charted by his divine
will.
As this is called Day of Re
membrance, it brings us unto
active participation in the cre-
a t i v e experiences of our
fathers, and it is good to merge
ourselves with their heritage,
hopes and dreams, their trials
and triumphs. They can be
vibrant and vivid and stir us to
exaltation. To attain these
ideals and to acquire this uni
que wealth we need to invest
something of our mind, some
thing of our spirit. We can in
deed add something of our own
creative self, and transmit the
torch to our descendants. If by
some chance we were to be cut
off from our history and from
the thinking and feeling of
former days, we should lose
much that was glorious and |
meaningful and would be in
danger of receding into obli
vion.
For are we not the bene
ficiaries of the thoughts and
deeds of the pilot minds of men
and women who cast their
light upon the earth? It is the
legacy taught and transmitted
by our heroic luminaries of the
past generations. They have
entered into our hands and
hearts and we can both hear
and see them. They have built
that we may preserve. They
have amassed wealth that we
may be sustained. They have
discovered meaning and pur
pose, and these are the direc
tions for us so that we may
climb the hills and adventure
on the sun rays of the human
spirit. We must be true to our
selves, to the best impulses of
our heart. We must walk hand
to hand with our prophets and
with our scholars who have
built the citadel of our faith.
And it is by this eternal
faith that we pray G-d to keep
our hearts and minds from anv
kind of prejudice, of any ill-
thoughts, and draw the living
waters of the Torah to refresh
our souls, to restrengthen our
minds. It is this banner of the
Torah around which we gather
today as our fortress and our
trilst for a good and happy,
and sweet New Year of 5727.
May all be inscribed in the
Book of lives. TIZKU LESHA-
