then be possible to travel at
breakneck speed from one
section of the country to an
other. What will we talk
about? How quickly we made
the trip from here to there.
And all we shall have seen is
the ribbon of road stretching
endlessly before us.
We travel the road of life
in much the same way. We
are so taken up by life’s ma
terial enticements that we
have neither the time nor the
desire to enjoy its spiritual
beauty. We roar down the
road of daily existence, eyes
fixed firmly on the pavement,
our senses grimly directed to
avoiding obstacles and evad
ing danger until we arrive
tense, breathless, and trium
phant at our distant goal.
Occasionally on the high
way it becomes necessary to
refuel. Only then do we catch
our breath as we check our
cars and fill their tanks with
gas. Our man-made engines
cannot run forever without
pause. Neither can our God-
made selves. We, too, require
a time to check our engines
and take on needed fuel. Un
less we learn to pause on the
headlong journey through
life, our days will remain an
empty and futile race on a
hard and endless concrete
treadmill.
But we pay more attention
to our machines than we do
to ourselves. When their gas
gauge reads “empty,” we stop.
When the gauge of ourselves
urges us to pause, we ignore
its insistent message and
hurtle on. But we are not al
together stupid. Aware of our
weakness, we have created
periods of enforced rest from
the incessant pounding of life,
days that force us off the
road and offer refreshment of
spirit and renewal of soul.
Rosh Hashana is one such
day—a sort of scheduled rest
stop on the highway of life. It
bids us become aware of life’s
purpose again, to find mean
ing and value in our exist
ence, to see the presence of
God in our lives. It offers re
newed strength to the weary,
renewed hope to the despond
ent, renewed faith to the
fearful. How desperately we
stand in need of such a spiri
tual renewal in our day. The
problems that beset us test
the mettle of the human soul.
Our cities crumble in decay,
our people steep themselves
in hate, our sons fight a far-
off war.
Now comes the day of re
newal, this reminder that the
world is God’s creation and
has withstood all the ravages
of time. Now comes this day
of the spirit of man, this chal
lenge to write our names, too,
in the Book of Life. Now

comes this day of the clarion
call, this summoning by the
ram’s horn to hope and duty.
May each of us, on this
Rosh Hashana, put aside
despair and conquer fear. May
our prayers refresh our spirits
and renew our souls. May we
take up the journey again
with confidence and hope.
May we find joy and meaning
in the days ahead and use
them to bring fulfillment to
ourselves and a world of
peace and brotherhood for all
mankind.
