in the dimensions of man’s
highest hopes and his deepest
moral concerns.
We look for guides to help
us face the perplexities of our
days. May I put before you an
excerpt from Dr. Mordecai
M. Kaplan’s book “The Mean
ing of God in Modern Jewish
Religion,” which interprets
the meaning of Rosh Hashana
and which also may serve us
an illuminating beacon in our
quest for solution and salva
tion.
“. . .Looking at contempor
ary life by and large, it spells
insecurity, frustration and
nightmare. ‘The mass of men
lead lives of quiet despera
tion’, said Henry Thoreau.
Few men commit physical
suicide, but vast numbers
commit spiritual suicide. If
we are to go on living at all,
if we want life to be fruitful
and creative, we must refuse
to accept as final the man—
created evil in the world. The
triumphant note sounded by
Rosh Hashana in proclaiming
the kingship of God—the ulti
mate victory of righteous
ness—is the affirmation of
faith in humanity. What cour
age is in the face of danger,
religion is in the face of world
chaos brought on by man’s
own doings.” c
This decisive season of our
religious year is the time to
say A men to such a faith. In
deed, may we begin a new
year charged with this con
viction—the reclamation of
man and his victory over
himself. May we seek in the
coming Days of Awe a re
direction of our lives that
will enable us to walk with
stalwart heart and coura«gp
unafraid. May it be so. Truly,
a New Year—a year of re
newed faith and regenerated
spirit.
