Soviet Jewish
General Argues
JERUSALEM (JTA)—A Soviet
Jewish general sent an “open let
ter” to former Premier David
Ben-Gurion, protesting Ben-Gur-
ion’s statements on the plight of
Soviet Jewry. The letter, pub
lished here recently, was written
in perfect Hebrew and dated
March 30 in Moscow. It was sent
to the daily newspaper Maariv
by ordinary mail. The writer,
describing himself as Lieutenant
General Hirsch Plaskvow, 68,
severely criticized “Knesset Mem
ber Ben-Gurion” for his alleged
statements on Soviet Jewry dur
ing his visit to New York last
month. The letter asserted that
the former Prdlnier had com
pared Soviet policy toward Jews
with that of the Nazis.
The Soviet letter-writer, who
signed his name in a flowing
Hebrew handwriting, declared
that Soviet authorities succeeded
in withdrawing hundreds of thou
sands of Jews from World War
II combat zones threatened by
the advancing German troops in
the invasion of Russia. About
himself, he said that he was born
in Minsk and had studied at a
yeshiva because his father want
ed him to be a rabbi but that he
had chosen to become a soldier.
He added that “my son also is an
officer in the Soviet army.” He
said Mr. Ben-Gurion’s statements
in New York were a “gross slan
der.”

Yeshivah Semantics
Professors at college are not the only ones who quibble
about semantics.
The Israeli parents had selected a New York yeshivah for
their 9-year-old son as a fine school where a young Sabra can
study his mother tongue and get a good Jewish education.
They were disturbed last spring when the “yelid” came
home crying. Naturally, they sought the source of the tears.
“The children say I’m not a Jew because I’m not as Ortho
dox as them.”
“Why didn’t you see the teacher?”
“Oh, he seems to agree with the pupils.”
The father is a member of Israel’s United Nations
delegation.
“My son is the only pupil whose native language is He
brew,” the outraged parents told the yeshiva authorities.
The matter was reportedly settled and their son apparent
ly is being accepted by his classmates.
Ask Reductions
In Zim Holdings
JERUSALEM (JTA)— Israel’s
government has asked the Jewish
Agency and Histadrut, the Israel
federation of labor, to reduce
their holdings in the Zim Israel
Navigation Company, thus per
mitting the Government to in
crease its Zim holdings, the Cab
inet spokesman revealed here.
The government, the Agency and
United States and Zambia about
the plot. The bridge is vital to the
transport of Zambian copper and
its destruction would have seri
ously affected the world supply
of the metal.
Histadrut now own one-third
each of the Zim shares. Under the
government proposal, the two
other partners would reduce their
holdings to 10 per cent each, per
mitting the government to own
80 per cent. The government has
been meeting Zim’s operational
deficit. The new ownership plan
was recommended by a Minister
ial Committee headed by Min
ister of Justice Yacov S. Shapiro.
The Committee also recom
mended that Zim reduce its pas
senger department’s operations.
These, the committee reported,
had been the main reason for the
company’s losses. However, the
committee held that the passen
ger department should not be
completely liquidated.
