Call UN Scientist *
Who Found Water
*A Modern Moses*
UNITED NATIONS (WUP) —
A UN scientist, heading an ex
ploration team which located
major subterranean reservoirs
beneath an area of virgin soil,
uncultivated because of lack of
water, has been termed by the
villagers in the semi-arid south
western region of Madagascar a
“modem Moses” and the pure
water “a miracle,” according to
a report released here by the UN
Development Program.
“Villagers are now drinking
and bathing and watering their
cattle at newly-drilled artesian
wells,” the report noted.
The water was discovered as
part of a combined ground-water
and mineral resources explora
tion undertaken by the Govern
ment of Madagascar with the as
sistance from the UNDP. The UN
Department of Economic and So
cial Affairs is carrying out the
$1,561,800 project, for which
UNDP has earmarked $1,000,800.
To date, eleven holes have
been drilled and water has
been pumped from seven of
them. Experts in the field esti
mate that the groundwater area
may cover as much as 300 square
miles.
