NEW YEAR MESSAGE
To Meet The Challenge
by RABBI SYDNEY K. MOSSMAN
Spiritual Leader, Congregation Sherith Israel
The Jew and the Jewish
world will never be the same
again. This thought dominates
and pervades everything we
say, think, and do during the
course of our High Holy Days.
We have been touched and
moved as
never before
in our lives.
There are
demands and
challenges be
ing thrust up
on us as few
other genera
tions have had
to meet. But
what of it?
wonderful time in which
to be alive? who wants
to rid himself of the
exciting though that he
is alive at an unparalleled
moment of Jewish history
just because there are de
mands and challenges? On the
contrary, the exaltation of
these days must surely leave
us with the feeling that al
most anything can be ac
complished if only we shall
will it so. The excitement of
the people of the State of
Israel, who speak now as
though they are hearing the
footsteps of the Messiah, is
also the excitement of all the
Children of Israel who, living
along side their brethren, are
being swept up in this surging
tide of incredible reality.
Just think, in Israel this
Yom Kippur they will not say
“next year in Jerusalem,"
that for the first tiihe in all
these centuries they are
there! The Jewish peo
ple has returned to Jeru
salem. The City of David is
once again ruled by David’s
children. And there is more
and still more to recount of
the miracle of the meaning
of the “Six Days.” Moved and
deeply touched, exalted and
inspired, bowed in humility
we stand before our Maker on
these sacred days to express
again, again and a tb ousan< *
times again our overwhelm
ing gratitude that He turned
what might have been our
unimaginable tragedy to our
indescribable victory.
During these sacred days
we will each one of us stand
before our “Wall” in solemn
thanksgiving and as our an
cestors of long ago we will
celebrate our “victory” by
praying for peace between
Arab and Jew, between North
Vietnames and South Viet-
names, between man and his
fellow man wherever he
dwells. Out of our hearts shall
go the surging tide of imme
morial prayers beseeching our
Creator for a year of life not
just for ourselves but for all
mankind. The salvation of the
Jew lies with the salvation of
Man. The Jew is a part of the
sands of humanity and only
as we huddle together can we
keep back the disastrous
waves of the oceans of hate
that would engulf and destroy
us.
In Atlanta, across this wide
continent and reaching across
all the countries of the world
in which Jews dwell, we shall
becalled upon during this
coming year to live up to the
“Six Days.” We cannot father;
we may not resist; we will
not turn our backs; we dare
not fail. Perhaps the greatest
tragedy would be to let these
“Six Days.” We canpot falter;
other days, to let their exalted
mood be dragged decrepitly
and despairingly into the ash
heap of all our other failures.
We cannot permit this to
happen.
The Jew of America has
valiantly shown his identifica -
tion with the Jew of Israel.
The Jew of America has
splendidly demonstrated his
concern for Jews everywhere
across the wolrd. The Jew of
America has a thousand times
over shown his devotion and
loyalty to America, to the
ideals upon which this our
beloved country stands dedi
cated. Now has come that one
moment when the Jew of
America must demonstrate
through valiant deed his com
mitment to Judaism as exem
plified through the Mitzot of
the Torah for only in this way
only will he meet the chal
lenges and the demands, the
soulsearing impact of the
“Six Days.”
May Almighty G-d who
heard the cry of our people
in Nasser’s Sinai, on the
heights of Syria’s Golan and
on the banks of the river
Jordan, hear our cry so that
with His help and His inspi
ration we may achieve in the
coming year a New Year for
American Jewry and for our
selves.
