NEW YEAR MESSAGE
Spirit & Worship
By RABBI TOBIAS GEFFEN
Shearith Israel Congregation
Atlanta, Georgia
High Holy Days-5728
This Rosh Hashana will find
the Jewish people entering the
Synagogues throughout the
world in a mood overflowing
with historic experience. This
special feeling will be coupled
with a profound desire to offer
prayers of thanksgiving to G-d.
Unbounded joy intermingled
with a deep sense of sorrow
and sadness will also charact
erize the spirit of worship.
These intense and mixed emo
tions will be the culminating
result of the miraculous and
overwhelming Victory which
came to the people of the State
of Israel when they rose up as
one to defend their human
rights.
As we remind ourselves of
their determination to rescue
themselves from complete de
struction to which our violent
enemies had geared them
selves, we can well understand
their vigorous defense of their
State, their loved ones and
their great accomplishment
achieved in such a brief mo
ment of history. Their victory

assured the continuation of the
homeland of the Jewish peo
ple as a state and a nation—
strong, civilized and dedicated
to the b' jhest ideals of human
living.
The High Holy Days this
year will also witness the ex
pression of our pride in the
bravery, dedication, love, abil
ity and wisdom of the Israeli
Armed Forces and pride in the
unity of the entire people of
Israel and in their boundless
affection for the Holy City of
Jerusalem, the Western Wall
and the holy places, where
stood the ancient Temple of
the Jewish people—the most
sacred places on earth for
the Jewish people since the
days of Abraham and King
David.
On these High Holy Days we
will come to worship, anxious
to express our deep-felt pray
ers of thanksgiving to G d for
the mighty deeds which were
achieved for our people in this
day, in our time. We will re
joice but at the same time we
will feel deep sadness and sor
row for the loss of hundreds of
our very brilliant and talented
young men, many of them of
ficers, who gave their lives
“A1 Kiddush HaShem.”
Their supreme sacrifice and
the great ideals which led them
into this struggle will always
serve as a source of inspira
tion for all of their fellow Jews
whc survived the war. Their
chenshed souls are entered in
to the ranks of “The Holy and
the Pure”—the long line of
Israel’s martyrs. Through their
lives the continued existence
of our religion, our people, our
culture, and our tradition has
been assured.
Our feeling of joy is also
diminished by the fact that so
many human beings in the en
emy forces perished in a use
less war into which they had
been misled.
Our Prayers will rise up to
the Almighty on these sacred
