THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Friday, Oct. 13, 1967
By Dr. Samuel H. Silver
No expression has become more
popular in current parlance than
the query, “Would you believe?”
The question is usually follow
ed by something
or other.
On Yom Kippur
it would suffice
merely to repeat^
this phrase.
Would you be
lieve?
Would you hold
on to the beliefs
of your forefathers?
Our fathers believed that there
was a Force and Source in the
world making for a better socie
ty.
They asserted that the greatest
miracle of all is man’s ability to
Some British Brass
Opposed to Speech
LONDON (JTA)—Foreign Sec
retary George Brown, and a pow
erful pro-Arab element in the
Foreign Office, have been aroused
by announcement that Richard
Crossman, Lord President of the
Council, had accepted an invita
tion to speak at a rally Novem
ber 2 to celebrate the 50th an
niversary of the issuance of the
Balfour Declaration promising
the Jewish people a national home
in Palestine. Foreign Minister
Abba S. Eban of Israel is to take
part in the celebration.
According to the pro-Arab bloc
in the Foreign Office, the Arabs
will interpret the presence of Mr.
Crossman at the function as evid
ence of British Government sup
port for Israel. Mr. Crossman
clashed violently with the then
Foreign Minister, Ernest Bevin,
over his anti-Zionist policy prior
to 1948 and is regarded by Is
raelis as “one of their best friends
in Britain.”
make a comeback from faults
and errors.
They affirmed that they had
a mission to set an example of
virtuous living for the rest of
mankind.
They declared that the greatest
act of courage is the humble ad
mission of past follies.
They felt that the training of
children should take priority over
many other aims that lure us on.
They stated that the Torah was
the best schorah, that is, that
nothing is more valuable than
adherence to and dissemination
of, ethical precepts.
The High Holy day period is
the time when we are asked to
look our soul in. the face, to ac
cept the moment of t rutty to
judge ourselves candidly and
valorously in the light of our
own private understanding of the
extent to which we have lived
up to our potentials.
During the past year we have
witnessed turmoil and tumult,
war and strife in the Mideast, in
the Midwest, all over the world.
It is easy to adjudge others. Each
of us has a view about Vietnam,
about Nasser, about civil rights
and civil riots.
We don’t know where the next
problem will erupt.
They tell about the Detroiter
who last June wrote his relatives
in Israel: “If you want to stay
there, all right, but hend the
children here, where they will be
safe.” Later on in the summer, the
Detroiter got a message from his
Israeli relatives: “If you want to
stay there, all right, but send the
children here where they will be
safe.”
Yes, external events magnetize
our interest and require our aid.
But on Yom Kippur we get
down to bedrock. We judge our
selves. We confront the ultimate
interrogation: would you believe?
And if you do believe, what are
you going to do about your be
liefs? Or, as one person put it,
“What on earth are you doing
here?”

Attlee, Israel Foe,
Dies at 84 in London
LONDON (JTA)—Lord Attlee,
84, the former Clement Attlee,
leader of the Labor Party between
1936 and 1951 and Prime Min
ister from 1945 to 1951, died here
last week.
Attlee’s leadership of the gov
ernment covered the years just
prior to and after the establish
ment of the modern State of Is
rael. It was under his premier
ship that the late Ernest Bevin,
as Secretary for Foreign Affairs,
made determined attempts to liq
uidate the Jewish national home,
instituted a drive against the Pal
estinian Jewish settlement’s de
fense organization, the Haganah,
arrested leaders of the Jewish
Agency and returned Jewish con
centration camp survivors to
Germany. Attlee not only con
doned but actively supported all
those moves.

BE A WEIGHT WATCHER
learn how to lose weight and keep it off
with the Original WEIGHT WATCHERS
The World's Largest Weight Control Organization
Four years ago, a 214 pound fat woman
lost 72 pounds and slipped into the
first size 12 she’d ever been able to
wear. It changed her life.
Her name is Jean Nidetch . . . wife,
mother of two sons ... a stunning
blond beauty. Jean knows full well the
pain, the sorrow, the hopelessness of
being fat. She has suffered the unkind
remarks of thin friends. She has burn
ed with envy at the svelte size sevens.
She has hated herself, despised her
lack of will power . . . her repeated
failures. Time after time, Jean made
herself promise to lose weight. Time
after time, she let herself down. Then
at an obesity clinic, she learned for the
first time a comfortable way to lose
weight . . . and began to find she could
keep her weight off when she shared
her exciting new knowledge with a
group of overweight friends. From
weekly meetings in her living room,
to a rented loft, to Weight Watchers
International—which is living proof
that overweight people can be slim.
WHAT IS WEIGHT WATCHERS?
Weight Watchers is an educational
program designed to teach you how to
eat sensibly. It’s not a fad, a crash
program or an exercise group. You
take no pills or medication. It’s not
magic . . . except for the weight you
lose. At Weight Watchers you learn
new ways of eating and you learn
them together with other overweight
people in a friendly, helpful atmos
phere. Hundreds of thousands of lost
pounds prove it works! Many doctors,
psychologists and nutrition experts
give it their full approval . . . often
take classes themselves. Your lecturer
is a former “heavyweight” . . . trained
by Jean Nidetch herself. At Weight
Watchers you learn how to lose weight
. . . and keep it off . . . forever!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
When you join Weight Watchers, you
join a series of classes. From the be
ginning, we set a realistic goal for you
. . . and every week we keep tabs on
your progress. You keep it up until
you’ve reached your ideal figure.
From then on you may go on “main
tenance” . . . come to Weight Watch
ers once a month if you wish, to check
up on yourself. (Though experience
shows most Weight Watchers come
back to see their friends.) The cost?
Registration is just $3.00 . . . Weekly
classes $2.00 ... a fantastic bargain
for a new way of life!
