of Chattanooga, announce the en
gagement of their daughter, Miss
Beverly Sue Chawkin, to Todd
Arthur Stein, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Sidney Stein of Memphis and
Miami Beach.
'' The bride-elect is the sister of
Miss Audrey Chawkin and Sam
my Warren Chawkin. She is the
granddaughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. L. W. Kaufman of
Atlanta and the late Mr. and
Mrs. -Samuel Chawkin of Chat
tanooga.
A graduate of Chattanooga
High School, Miss Chawkin at
tended the University of Georgia,
where she was a member of Sig
ma Delta Tau Sorority and Belle
Corps, honorary military society.
She was on the Sweetheart Court
of Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity. The
future bride is presently a sen
ior at Merpphis State University,
majoring in secondary education.
The pr6spective bridegroom is
the brother of Harve and Martin
Stein of Memphis. He is the
grandson of the late Mr. and
Mrs. Mose Stein and the late Mr.
and Mrs. Morris Kriechman of
Detroit
Mr. Stein was graduated from
White Station High School. He
attended the University of Ten
nessee, where he was affiliated
with Zeta Beta Tau fraternity.
The future bridegroom atten
ded the Memphis Academy of
Arts and received a business de
gree from Charron-Williams Col
lege in Miami. He is presently
serving in the U. S. Coast Guard
OBITUARIES
Nehemiah Friend
Nehemiah Friend of Haifa,
Israel, died November 1. He was
the brother of Jacob Friend of
Atlanta.
Mr. Friend lived most of his
life in Lodz, Poland, until he
was deported to Asia during
World War II. After the war
he returned to Lodz briefly to
find that his wife and two
daughters had been killed in the
holocaust. Since 1948 he had
made his home in Israel where
he worked for the government.
About seven years ago he visit
ed in Atlanta with his brother.
Other survivors include a bro
ther, Joseph Friend, of Miami,
and nieces and nephews.
Carl Zwerner
Carl Zwerner, 65, of N. Miami
Beach, died October 25.
Survivors include his wife, the
former Frances Skott; daughter,
Beverly; sister, Mrs. Jack Kraft,
Washington; brother, Herman
Zwerner, Shreveport, La., and
several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Rose Josel
Mrs. Rose Wolfson Josel of At
lanta died Sunday, Oct. 29.
Funeral services were held Oc
tober 30 with Rabbi Jacob Roth
schild officiating. Interment was
in Crest Lawn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Josel was the widow of
Abraham Josel, a retail merch
ant, and had lived in Atlanta for
40 years. She was bom in Lith
uania and had also lived in Da
ri an, Ga., and Savannah.
She was a member of the Tem
ple, Temple Sisterhood, and the
National Council of Jewish Wom
en.
Survivors include grandsons,
Lee J. Tenenbaum, Dayton, and
Nat A. Josel, Baltimore; a son-in-
law, Abe B. Tenenbaum, Alanta,
and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ray B. Wald
Mrs. Ray Berger Wald, 83, of
Atlanta died Thursday, Oct 26.
Funeral services were held. Oc
tober 29 with Rabbi Harry H.
Epstein and Cantor Isaac Good-
friend officiating. Interment was
in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Wald, the widow of Morris
Wald, was a member of Ahavath
Achim Synagogue.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. William Cohen, Atlanta,
and a brother, William Berger,
Miami.

The bride-elect graduated from
Henry Grady High School and is
presently attending Georgia State
College.
The future bridegroom is a
graduate of Morgan County High
School and is now attending
Georgia State College.
Wedding plans will be an
nounced at a later date.
Strenthall—Taitz
Judy Stemthall became the
bride of Jerry Bernard Taitz, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Taitz of
Atlanta, on October 29 at the
Temple. Rabbi Jacob Rothschild
officiated.
The bride, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Roland Stemthall of At
lanta, was given in marriage by
her father. Mrs. Myles Levitt was
her sister’s matron of honor and
Betsy Stemthall, sister of the
bride, was maid of honor. Mrs.
Michael Amato and Mrs. Keith
Beck, sisters of the bridegroom,
and Lyn Robinson were bridal
attendants.
Mr. Taiitz was his son’s best
man. Ushers were William Duber
and Jack Levin. Groomsmen were
Michael Amato and Fred Loef
of Athens, Norman Golivesky of
Valdosta, and Ronnie Schreiber
of Moultrie.
The bride’s parents gave a re
ception at the Temple. After a
wedding trip to Jamaica, the
newlyweds will live in Atlanta.
Herman Popkin
To Camp Parley
Herman M. Popkin, president
of the Southern Association of
Private Camps, will attend the
national Private Camp Consulta
tion in Indianapolis November 10-
12, under the sponsorship of the
American Camping Association.
To be attended by same forty
private camp directors from
throughout the country, the con
sultation had as its theme: “Years
of Challenge and Opportunity.”
Follow-up sessions will be held
this spring—March 12-16, 1968—
in Boston at the National Amer
ican Camping Association Con
vention to share the results of
the consultation with all prviate
camping people. Gene Altman,
national vice president for Private
Camps, called the three-day ga
thering to explore the private
camping field “and where we are
going tomorrow—in the 70’s.”

Meeting Nov. 16
The November meeting of the
Atlanta Area Mothers of Twins
Club will be held Thursday, Nov.
16, at 8 p.m., in the Buckhead
branch of the Atlanta Federal
Savings and Loan Assn. Mrs. Pat
Cushman, director of the Lenox
Day Nursery, will speak about
the Montessori Method of teach
ing the pre-school child. There
will be no December meeting.

Sue to Alan H. Cohen, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Bernard W. Cohen
of Atlanta.
The bride elect was graduated
from Massey Junior College
where she was on the Student
Council and a member of Alpha
Chi Delta. She is employed by
J. P. Allen.
Mr. Cohen is the grandson of
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Cohen and
Mrs. Aaron D. Bernstein of At
lanta and the late Aaron D.
Bernstein of Chicago. He was
graduated from Druid Hills High
School and Carnegie Institute of
Technology where he was a
member of Beta Sigma Rho. He
received his Masters degree from
Emory University. Mr. Cohen is
employed by IBM Corporation
in Atlanta.
The wedding will take place
on January 27 at the Atlanta
Cabana.
Mizrachi Holds
Donor Lunch
November 13
Atlanta Chapter of Mizrachi
Women will hold a “kick-off”
Luncheon for its Annual Donor
on Monday, Nov. 13, at 12 Noon
in the Youth Lounge at the At
lanta Jewish Community Center.
Luncheon will cost $1.00.
A movie entitled, “Scrolls of
Lleuvarden”, will be shown.
This movie depicts the removal
of the sacred Torah Scrolls from
the Dutch community of Lleu
varden and the dedication of the
new Synagogue in one of Mizra
chi Women’s Children’s Villages.
Plans for the forthcoming An
nual Donor Luncheon, which is
scheduled for December 18, will
be announced. Members are re
quested to bring their charity
boxes to this meeting.
DJG-BBG
DJG is working hard on its an
nual fund-radsing everuL—a fash
ion show accompanied by an orig
inal skit, “Alice in Commercia-
land” (a satire on commercials).
Mrs. Milton Weinman is helping
to write and direct the play.
Tickets will be sold for the event
for $1.00. The fashion show will
be held ait the Atlanta Jewish
Community Center on January
14.
Among its many community
service projects, DJG gave a Hal
loween party to crippled children
at Aidemore Hospital. It was a
very rewarding experience for
everyone involved.
DJG’s new officers for the
1967-1968 year are: president,
Candy Cohen; first vice president,
Vicki Sdlberstein; second vice
president, Marguerite Mitchell;
recording secretary, Harriet Feld
man; corresponding secretary,
Deegee Isacson; treasurer, Betsy
Karp; and sergeant at arms,

Dr. Oscar Grahlowsky, son at
Mr. and Mrs. Bemie Grahlowsky
of WUliston, S. C., has been
named ohief resident in surgery
at Charity Hospital in New Or
leans. Dr. Grahlowsky, an honor
graduate of Williston-Elko High
School, attended Emory Univer
sity in Atlanta and received his
medical degree from TuLane. He
completed his internship at Char
ity Hospital and has been a sur
gery resident there for the past
three years. Dr. Grahlowsky, who
is married to the former Maxine
Weitzman of Dallas, Tex., will
begin his duties in June of 1968.
