36th General Assembly of the
Council of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds, representing
more than 200 Jewish commun
ities, called on the United States
Government to “continue to work
for policies which would bring
Arabs and Israelis face-to-face
at the peace table” for solution
of the conflict In the Middle East.
In a resolution, the Assembly
declared that “until peace is
achieved, and to meet the new
threat brought about by the re
arming of the Arab states, it is
crucial that Israel be enabled to
maintain its capacity to uphold
the peace and to deter further
aggression, and we therefore urge
the United States Government to
continue to take such steps as
will help make possible this es
sential deterrent”
Louis J. Fox, of JJaitimore, was
re-elected president of the
CJFWF; and Max M. Fisher, of
Detroit, Alan V. Lowenstein of
Newark, Edwin Rosenberg of
New York, Cedi Usher of Mon
treal and Judge Nochem S. Win-
net of Philadelphia were re-elect
ed vice-presidents. Elected to first t
terms as vice-presidents were
Morris Giasser of Chicago and
Lawrence E. Irell of Los Angeles.
Carlos E. Israels of New York
was re-elected treasurer; and
Mrs. Joseph Cohen, of New Or
leans, secretary.

The resolution pointed out that
home needs required additional
support and noted that “despite
the expansion of governmental
health and welfare programs, in
creased oontaibutdons are requir
ed for Jewish voluntary serv
ices.”
Another resolution took note
of the 50th anniversary of the
Russian Revolution. It appealed
to the leaders of the Soviet Union
to act upon Lenin’s promises of
national self-determination and
religious freedom for all groups.
It urged that the continuing
strangulation of Jewish religious,
cultural end communal life In
the Soviet Union be halted.
Statue of Liberty
Copied in Tel Aviv
TEL AVTV (JTA) — A 30-foot
high replica of the Statue of
Liberty was unveiled at the en
trance to Israel’s largest super
market, where a “Live Like An
American” exhibit was opened.
The store, “Kol Bo Shalom,” is
staging an “American Fort
night,’’ during which more than
$350,000 worth of American
products are on display for sale.
The American products range
from clothing to gadgets and
foodstuffs. A statue of Lincoln
has been placed at the entrance
to an “American Pavilion” in
the store. American Indian
dancers and cowboys will per
form daily Indian dances. A
saloon modeled on those of the
American Wild West provided
American whiskey.
Becker Ends Tour
MONTEVIDEO (JTA)—Aha
ron Becker, general secretary of
Histadrut, left here for the
United States after completing
an extensive tour of Latin
America which took him to
Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Argen
tina and Uruguay. He met here
with Labor Minister Acosta
Ilara and with local trade union
and Jewish community leaders.
Chagall Painting
Shown in Moscow

LONDON (JTA) — A draw
ing by Marc Chagall is being
exhibited in the Soviet Union
for the first time since the artist
left Russia in 1922, according to
information reaching here from
Moscow. The small red water-
color sketch titled ‘Teace to the
Huts, War to the Mansions,”
dated 1918-1919, has been on
display in Moscow’s Tretyakov
Gallery as part of a special
showing of revolutionary and
civil war posters in honor of the
50th anniversary of the Soviet
Revolution. Chagall’s paintings
have been barred from Russian
galleries since the Stalin period.

Planned for 1975
JERUSALEM (JTA) — An
atomic powered seawater desali
nation and electric generating
plant to be built in Israel as a
joint project of Israel and the
United States will not be ready
until 1975, but will have an elec
tric output of 800 megawatt#,
50 percent greater than origin
ally planned, James Ramey,
member of the U.S. Atomic
Energy Commission, said here.
He said that the atomic plant
which will be the second largeet
of its kind in the World,’ will
have a desalting capacity of 100
million gallons' of Water per day.
It was originally supposed to go
into operation in 1973.
