benediction of the Hanuka
lights?
ANSWER: The earliest text ot
this we have is one of the so-
called minor tractates of the Tal
mud (Massetket Soferim) which
some critics claim is from the
Gaonic period. Its final redaction
was from that period although
the material may well be from
the Talmudic period. This gen
erally gives the meaning of the
candle lighting and proclaims the
miracle. Many pronounce this
formula after the first candle is
lit and before lighting the rest
(on those nights when more than
one candle is lit). Some claim
that this paragraph has 3G words
and that this represents the num
ber of candles that are lit in total
on the eight days of Hanuka.
Some carry this number value of
36 further and connect it to the
account in the Midrash (Genesis
Rabbah 11) where it is told that
Adam had 36 hours of uninter
rupted light after he was created.
Thereafter, the world grew dark
and Adam was \frightened lest
his punishment cast him into
total darkness. He later under
stood that such is the process of
nature. Later, when the day
started growing longer, he felt
as if he were once again coming
into the good graces of the Al
mighty. The Hanuka festival
comes just at about the time
when the shortest day is reached
and the day starts to grow longer.
The Hanuka lights thus serve as

QUESTION: Why is there no
special festival meal associated
with Hanuka as there is with
other holidays?
ANSWER: The Talmud con
trasts the objectives of the ob
servance of Hanuka with that
of Purim. Purim is classified as
“days of feasting and gladness”
(Esther 9:22) while Hanuka is
classified as “days of praise and
thanksgiving” (Talmud Babli,
Shabbat 21a). The commenta
tors explain that the difference
between Hanuka and Purim in
this respect lies in the nature of
what was at stake in the crisis
and what was saved in the vic
tory. In the episode of Purim, the
bodily existence of the Jewish
population was at stake because
Haman had ordered their exter
mination bodily. Therefore, the
festival is enjoyed in the bodily
pleasure of eating and drinking.
In the episode which brought
about Hanuka, the spiritual exis
tence of the Jewish people was
at stake since Antiochus had for
bidden them to observe certain
basic Jewish rites and the Hel
lenistic form of paganism was
sweeping the country. Thus, the
victory of the spirit is celebrated
in matters of the spirit—by of
fering praise and thanksgiving to
the Almighty. Some have allow
ed themselves the liberty of
feasting on Hanuka because the
Hebrew version of the Megillah
of Antiochus (originally written
in Aramaic and having no allus
ion to feasting) does contain a
statement like that found in the
Book of Esther which alludes to
“feasting and gladness” as the
keynote of Hanuka. While un
doubtedly this was just a matter
of copying a formal expression
from the canonical Book of
Esther in order to give the Meg
illah of Antiochus a look of can
onical authenticity (which it
never had and never attained),
some people used to take this as
an authorization for a Hanuka
feast.
Responsible rabbinic authorities
always opposed such a practice
and regarded any feast that took
place on Hanuka as an optional
one without any real religious
connotation. Among the Sephar
dic (Oriental) Jewish commun
ities, the custom developed of
having a special holiday feast for
children on Hanuka. In Algiers,
a special meal was made for the
schoolchildren in which a special
delicacy containing meat, wine
and sweets was served. In Jerus
alem, Sephardic Jews conducted
such feasts for schoolchildren on
the last day of Hanuka. Trans
ferring the feast to children in
dicates that feasting was not an
official adult requirement for
Hanuka. Yet, since the spirit of
feasting persisted, it was carried
out among the children. This may
very well be the basis of Han
uka parties which the Occidental
Jewish world carries on for chil
dren in our own day.
