AMERICAN SCENE .... By Geolye Friednuks
Sophie
Sally Priesand, studying at
Cincinnati’s Reform Seminary
to he the' world’s first woman
rabbi, would not, however, be
the first woman to officiate in
a synagogue. The late Sophie
Tucker did it for many years
as a High Holiday honored guest
at the Acton Temple in New
York, leading the Torah read
ings. Her long-time publicity
man, Marvin Kohn, says she has
been credited with raising as
much as $18,000 in a single serv
ice.
Miss Tucker—who once re
ceived seven ovations from a
Dutch audience relieved to dis
cover she was not, as her records
led them to believe, a Negro
ger—was tendered a dinner in
by the American Federation
of Actors. It was held at Maoca
Temple, New York, and the dais
guests included Eddie Cantor,
Jack Benny, George Burns and
Harry Hirschfield.
As she recalled in her auto
biography, Miss Tucker respond
ed to the praise-filled speeches
by saying: “Tonight you’ve mada
me happy—happier than I ever
thought I could be. I hope Rabbi
Tintner will forgive me for
muscling in on his territory.
Just for that, if he wants to, he
can get up and sing ‘Some of
lliese Days’!”
With the swearing in of As
sociate Justice Harry Andrew
Blackmun, a Methodist, the
“Jewish seat” on the Supreme
Court has become de-Judaicixed
for the first time in 38 years.
Benjamin Nathan Cardoso, who
succeeded three-decade Justice
Oliver Wendell Holmes, served
from 1932 to 1938. His place was
subsequently taken by Felix
Frankfurter, 1939-62; Arthur Jos
eph Goldberg, 1902-65; and Abe
Fortas, 1905-09. (The only other
Jewish Justice has beep Louis
Dambitz Brandeis, 1910-3 9.)
Ironically, the seat now occu
pied by conservative Minnesotan
Blackmun is situated on the ex
treme left of the High Court
bench.

Seven leaders of black cooper
atives in the American South
are in Israel to inspect irriga
tion methods and related com
munal practices. A smaller group
made a shorter visit last year.
The tours were coordinated by
Histadrut, to which the black
leaders were referred by the
Scholarship, Education and De
fense Fund for Racial Equal
ity.
SEDFRE president Marvin
Rich says “a lot of people were
very impressed” with the data
obtained in 1909. “There is
much that the Israeli coops have
to offer,” .he notes. Greg Bar-
dacke, executive director of the
Trade Union Council for Hista
drut, offers an additional insight:
There are similar coops in Cal
ifornia, but the Negroes felt they
would be more welcome in Is
rael.

American soprano Grace Bum
bry took the Salome story lit
erally the other day at Covent
Garden, London. Starring in
Richard Strauss’ opera on the
exploits of that Biblical lady,
Mies Bumbry dutifully peeled
off all seven veils. She did, to
be sure, have sufficient cover
ings on underneath to protect
her modesty and the house’s
license. Still, never was more
apt St. Matthew’s observation
(XIV, 0): “The daughter of
Herodias danced before them,
and pleased Herod.” Not to men
tion the audience.
