learning Foundations Tackle Reading
Voids With Scholarships, New Techniques
Learning Foundations has an
nounced a $60,000 allocation for
“reading” scholarships for dis
advantaged families in greater
Atlanta.
The move was the organiza
tion’s response to a call by U. S.
Commissioner of Education
James E. Allen for private sec
tor involvement in the National
Right to Read Program.
The program, proclaimed by
Dr. Allen to boost thousands
of Americans to a level of learn
ing through improving the ca
pacity to read, will enable a
large gamut of Americans on
academic need of each recipi
ent.
At the same time Learning
Foundations has asked for vol
unteers in the Atlanta area who
would like to help people learn
to read. Persons interested
should call 261-1841 to inform
the organisers of committees in
various districts of their avail
ability, hours, etc. These will be
trained to work as program su
pervisors.
Learning Foundations geared
to help people improve reading
skills, particularly youngsters,
uses modern methods to facili

many age levels to take a step arena and areas which until now
have virtually been blind spots

in the education process.
A computer analysis examina
tion is the first step in determ
ining the level and scope of cor
rection and progress necessary
to enable the pupils to go for
ward. The ability to read or the
lack of it is at the root of most
trouble pupils have in school,
officials noted.
The summer is an excellent
time to ascertain what stumbling
blocks exist in the learning pro
cess and to make the proper
corrective steps, the agency of
ficials said.
“The right to read is a heri
tage of every American,” Dr.
James E. Allen declared, “yet
ten million youngsters have
trouble in this area.” His promo
tion of the National Right to
Read Program is to insure that
by the end of the 1970s, no child
will leave school without know
ing how to' read. „
