Some people like to reed fic

history more interesting. Guess
we are a little strange that way,
but that’s the way it is with us.
So we are pleased to learn that
Dr. Jacob Marcus of the Hebrew
Union College is now being giv

Prof. Marcus has taught a
variety of subjects at the He
brew Union College but his forte
is American Jewish history. He
has given the study of American
Jewish history the status which
it has previously lacked as a
college study.
There are numerous Jews
writing on American history, but
Jewish professors have usually
displayed little interest in the
Jewish part
The big pioneer in the field of
American Jewish history was
an Irish Roman Catholic; Judge
Charles P. Daly. Let’s face It.
We Jews can’t get along without
the goyim. Who taught the
Hagana its tricks? It was Orde
Wingate, an Englishman; Who
established the first Jewish
agricultural settlement in Pal
estine? It was an American
Christian, Warder Cresson,
American consul to Jerusalem
around the time just prior to
the Civil War.
After the Irishman Daly got
interested in it, some Jews
thought to themselves, “Maybe
it’s a business” and they began
to get interested. Judge Daly
often presided at Meetings of
the American Jewish Historical
Society.
The study of Jewish history
in America usually begins with
the story of the arrival of 23
Jews in New Amsterdam or New
York in 1654. But perhaps it
could begin—at least in my book
—thirty years earlier with the
Pilgrim settlement The Pil
grims and Puritans cultivated
the Hebrew language. John Mil-
ton used to read a psalm in
Hebrew every morning. How
many Jews do that? Some of
the leaders of Plymouth Rock
could have taught Hebrew in a
Talmud Torah.
More than a century later,
Alexander Hamilton is said to
have been able to recite the Ten
Commandments in Hebrew, but
Hamilton’s Hebrew knowledge
was not of Puritan derivation.
He was bom in the West Indies
and apparently as a boy atten
ded a Jewish school. His mo
ther’s first husband was a Jew.
Actually, the study of Amer
ican Jewish history can go far
ther back—to the time of actual
discovery. Many Jews, as
everyone knows by now or
ought to know—were associated
with the project of Columbus.
Sometimes it is good to listen
to a goy like the Jews listened

is good ter goyiiiv to lists® to
Jews as Isabella listened to Luis
de Santangel. She at first had
turned down Columbus and
Santangel came running in.
“Isabella,” he said, “how can
you be so dumb?”
“Is Columbus one of your
mishpoche?” Isabella asked.
"Whether he is does not matter,"
said Santangel “The point is
this is the great opportunity of
your life.”
“But Luis,” Isabella said,
“where am I going to get the
money? Do you know we
haven’t paid the mortgage on
the last war yet?"
“It doesn’t matter,” said de
Santangel, f*You will never get
an opportunity like this again.
Central Park alone is worth the
money and you will get the
whole America. You Spaniards
do one dumb thing after ano
ther. First you expel the Jews.
Then you turn down the oppor
tunity to discover America.”
So Isabella relented.
History is made up of little
things like that. Harry Simon-
hoff has written the story of
one of Miami’s pioneers, Isidore
Cohen, a peddler who arrived in
Miami by canoe to peddle no
tions. It was the only way then
to reach the place which was
very scantily settled. Isidore
Cohen liked the place and began
peddling in the neighborhood.
Then suddenly it began to
bloom. And many people be
gan making money in the rise of
land values. But Cohen had a
gift for writing and he was more
interested in writing about the
old places. Others grew rich,
but Cohen became the author
ity on early Miami.
There were many such stories.
Three Jews arrived in Kansas
in the fifties of the last cen
tury to start stories. Then John
Brown, the anti-slavery leader
came to that territory. John
Brown’s army consisted of only
about thirty followers but the
three storekeepers were among
these thirty.

of thlrtaan arrived in America.
Ha was too young for the army.
Ha got a job rolling tobacco,
making cigars. That was the
start of the leader of the Fed
eration of Labor, Samuel Gomp-
ers. About the same time, a'
young Jew arrived in the New
York harbor and couldn’t wait
for the boat to land. He jumped
overboard and swam to shore. It
was Joseph Pulitzer, who later
founded the New York World
and brought the Statue of Lib
erty to the New York harbor.
Maybe the idea occurred to him
when he swam to shore.
