LETTERS TO rDI ToR
The Congregation of
Temple Jaakov
Dear Sir:
Here at Temple Jaakov we
are having a problem We ad
dress ourselves to it with dili
gence, in the hope that its ex
posure to the Jewish commun
ity, through publication in your
newspaper, will garner a solu
tion.
As you may know. Temple
Jaakov is located within the
United States Penitentiary here
in Atlanta. We are not blessed
with a rich congregation, nor
indeed even with a large one.
In fact, beyond our hour-long
Temple meetings once a week,
we have very little to support
and enhance our Jewry. There
are a ample of feasts every
year, some fair literature, and
much discussion. We have no

teacher.
But more than all there is the
very painful void of never
seeing or talking with other
Jews in this community. Then'
is some question in our own
hearts that we could really
share meaningfully with our
Jewish amtemporaries faun the
outside. So long away from
Jewry leaves us like the cave-
fish. too long in darkness.
To specify a remedial begin
ning: we want to learn Hebrew.
Our Jewish heritage is difficult
enough to establish in a foreign
land. Within these walls, even
our Jewish identity is retained
only by a remarkable will to
do so.
Our attitude may be com
mended even by ourselves with
out being arrogant or bumpti
ous. To a man, we at Temple
Jaakov, have accepted personal
responsibility for the mistakes
which brought us here. We take
seriously the issue of rehabili
tation.
So now we have learned our
trades from the gentiles. And
we are not ungrateful. But will
our own brother on the other
side of the walls let us learn
our Jewry from gentiles?
In short, we wonder why we
are cut from the Jewish com
munity in so great a city? Our
mistakes did not impair our
love for God, or lessen our need
for kindness from our own
kind.
Why do we have to be treat
ed like Masoretic Lepers? We
have quite enough of that al
ready.
It may even be that deprived
as we are by disinterest, we
nonetheless have somet h i n g

Sir:
A copy of your August 18
issue on a desk near my office
attracted my attention and I
was particularly caught by the
headline, “Counteratt a c k on
Stoner New Milestone on Fight
ing Bigots.”
In reading Mr. Stuart Lewen-
grub’s article I couldn’t help but
feel that perhaps he and others
took a negative view of the res
ults of the Democratic primary
race for U. S. senator. This is
not, I hope, a means of trying
to excuse the lack of wide
spread public outcry from the
white Christian community — I
suspect white Christians by the
hundreds of thousands were
like me. They deplored the bi
gotry of J. B. Stoner but con
tinued to be a part of LBJ’s
“great silent majority.”
However, I don’t believe Mr.
Lewengrub is being entirely fair
when he condemns us for not
speaking out. We did speak,
though not in words to any
great degree (perhaps many of
us let the newspaper, TV and
radio editorialists’ comments
and the expressed opposition of
the National Conference of
Christians and Jews do our
speaking aloud for us).
I do not recall the total num
ber of voters who took part in
the primaries, both Democrat
and Republican. I know it was
far too few. Neither do I recall
breakdown between black and
white voters, but I do recall
that the white perentage was
much higher than the black
turnout, with the possible ex
ception of the 5th Congressional
district.
But I think Mr. Lewengrub
should review these figures and
perhaps he will see another side
of the picture. J. B, Stoner re
ceived ONLY 30,000 votes.
The time was, and not too
many years ago, that Georgians
by the hundreds of thousands
would have supported candi
dates who openly expressed op
position to integration, equal
opportunity and all the other
developments of recent years.
There would have been wide
spread cheering when he spoke
out against “niggers” and
t'kike.”
Is it not conceivable then that
many of the voters, Democrat
and Republican, who DID NOT
vote FOR Stoner were express
ing their opposition to him and
his beliefs?
Voting for someone normally
is construed to mean you

favor that person and his views.
But, at the same time, it means
you oppose others in the same
race. I believe that when most
white Christians voted for can
didates other than Stoner, they
were expressing their opposition
to him and his comparatively
few followers.
When you take a positive
view of the results of the pri
mary voting, weren’t hundreds
of thousands of white Christians
expressing silently but rather
effectively, that (using Mr.
Lewengrub’s term) they are
your friends?
I don’t see a letters to the
editor column in your paper
and, frankly, it was not my in
tent in writing to you to have
you publish my letter. Rather,
it is to suggest that perhaps
you, as editor, might want to
write something expressing a
more positive view of the res
ults of the primary election.
Regards,
W. E. HARRINGTON
Editor’s Note: Any way the res
ult Ls approached, Stoner was
repudiated at the polls. Too bad
the campaign gave him a plat
form even or so wide an audi
ence. In our book, a guy who
advocates genocide should be
barred from a race as a person
of moral turpitude.
