Starts August 31 With Gala

Selihot Services
Selihot services, the tradi
tional service of prayer, which
takes its name from the word
for “forgiveness” and climaxes
the pre-high holy day prepara
tions, will be held at several
Atlanta congregations.
Temple Sinai’s prayer service
will take place at 10:00 p.m.,
Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Church
of the Atonement, 4945 High-
point Rd., N. E,, according to
Rabbi Richard Lehrman.
Ahavath Achim, Beth Jacob
and Shearith Israel will each
hold the services at midnight
Saturday, Sept. 2. At Shearith
Israel, a seminar conducted by
Rabbi Donald Frieman and Can
tor Sherwood Plitnick will take
place prior to the service. Rabbi
Emanuel Feldman will lead an
informal discussion period at
Beth Jacob, with Cantor Ben
jamin Stiefel and the choir
leading the Selihot.
Or VeShalom will continue its
tradition of holding the service
at 4:00 a.m., with Rabbi S. Rob
ert Ichay conducting.

Lead Young Judaea
Miss Liora Goren and Ben
jamin Landey have been named
city directors of the Young Ju
daea program by the Atlanta
Zionist Hadassah Youth Com
mission. They will work with
the parent organization and
plan city-wide events for Hash-
achar, the 7ionist Youth Ac
tivities program of Hadassah.
Miss Goren, a Sabra who has
been in the United States for
three years, is a junior at Geor
gia State University majoring
in journalism. She has been a
Young Judaea Leader and has
taught religious school at Tem
ple Sinai. She is also an ac
complished artist
Ben Landey, a native of Val
dosta, has been active in Young
Judaea since 1953 and has
served as national vice presi
dent of Senior Judaea from the
South, attended Camp Tel Ye-
hudah and spent a year in Is
rael. He served as president of
Hillel at Emory, a counselor at
Camp Judaea and at
AJECOMCE Day Camp.
Mr. Landey has also taught
religious school both in Val
dosta and Atlanta. A graduate
of Emory Law School he served
with the Judge Advocate Gen
eral’s department and present
ly practices law in Atlanta. He
is married and has two daugh
ters.

“Hadassah Puts It All To
gether” is the theme chosen by
Atlanta Chapter for its “H-
Month” membership campaign
which gets underway August 31.
On that day, Mrs. Hiram

N. W., will host a new mem
bership gala at 1 p.m.
Honored guest will be Mrs.
Benjamin Bonney, wife of the
Israeli Consul General for the
Southeast.
Mrs. Frank Spiegel, chapter
president, said other “H-Month”
activities will continue through
September. She added, “A dra
matic increase in Hadassah
membership means the commit
ment of more American Jews
to putting democracy and hu
manitarian ideals to work in
the United States and to sup
porting Israel.’
Mrs. Robert Goldwasser,
membership vice president, said,
“Hadassah provides the Amer
ican Jewish woman with the
opportunity to play a vital role
in the wider community.” The
seven groups that make up the
Atlanta chapter have a mem
bership of over 2500 members.
Nationally there are 325,000
members.

NCCJ Elects Dubrof

and its components, including
Federation, educational institu
tions, religious institutions and
social services. Guests have in
cluded representatives from all
the community professions and
the format allows a free ex
change of information and ideas.
Presidents of each Jewish
women’s organization have re
ceived information about the
Institute of Awareness, Mrs.
Eisenberg said, and have been
asked to submit names of two
individuals with leadership
qualities who might benefit
from the experience.

of international law at the Uni
versity of Georgia.

a lengthy stay in Israel. They
were joined for a time by their

had been married there 40 years
ago and have many friends in

Kenneth Richard Fenster, son
of Mrs. Martin Fenater of At
lanta and the late Dr. Fenster,
has received a four-yew aca
demic scholarship to Transyl
vania Univerity In Lexington,
Ky.
Suzanne L Hirsch, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hirsch,
is one of 15 Tulane University
students who will study in
Spain this year as members of
the Tulane-Newcomb College
Junior Year Abroad program.
She will enter the University of
Madrid in September.

Bruce Harvey Beerman, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beerman,
has been notified that his
scholarship average during his
first year at the University of
Georgia Law School, placed him
at the top of his class. Like his
father, Bruce attended Georgia
Tech. He secured a degree in
mechanical engineering in 1971
before deciding he wanted a ca
reer in law and enrolled at
Athens.

Southern Branch Delegates
Representatives of 19 syna
gogues from six southern states
gathered in Atlanta on August
15 for a summer board meeting
of the Southern Branch, Na
tional Women’s League of the
United Synagogue of America.
Plans were begun for the re
gion’s annual conference, which
will be held in Savannah.

Miss Lillian Lavine of Macon
has retired after serving in the
office of the clerk of Bibb Coun
ty Superior Court for 47 years.
For a number of years she had
served as chief deputy clerk.
