his parents’ non-
observance that introduces
conflict hut the message
that goes with it, i e., that
observance is unnecessary,
perhaps silly or outdated "
If the child sees that his
non-observant parents are
“genuinely respectful and
sincerely appreciative" of
the commandments, he
will "feel at ease and com-
f o r t a b I e " with the
Jewishness inculcated in
the school. Rabbi
Halberstam said.
’’The parents must
therefore be educated in
this area of parental per
missiveness to allow their
children the involvement
with religion as if they
were ‘doing their own
thing.' Parents must be
brought into the school
and made to share in the
learning proces, to live and
experience Jewishness,"
Rabbi Halberstam
asserted. “Even if the
patents are not ready to
accept total Jewishness as
their own way of life, they
will no longer resent their
children’s active participa
tion in Yiddishkeit "
Rabbi Halberstam was
asked by the JTA whether
his recommendations were
entirely theoretical
proposals, which might not
survive the test of ex
perience, or whether he
had observed their applica
tion in real life situations
and could affirm that ire.
