AJWF Cites Cash Needs;
Urges Pledge Payment
Emphasizing that 1974 pledges
are Bot delinquent. Dr. Marvin
Goldstein, treasurer of the Atlanta
Jewish Welfare Federation and
chairman for cash collections, has
urged that payments be made
whenever possible because of
Israel's urgent need for cash.
In a report to the board of direc
tors of the Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation, Goldstein noted that
“Israel’s foreign currency reserves
have fallen below the theoretical
‘red line' which normally signals
economic crisis unless immediate
fiscal action is taken”.
He pointed out that “immediate
funds are required to sustain the
current level of immigration as
well as to implement the emergen
cy programs 'that must go on in
Israel at this time. Fortunately,
many thousands of new im
migrants are coming out of the
Soviet union, and we must do what
we can to help”.
Israel's current economic situa
tion is critical and the government
has been forced to take new
measures to meet the budget and
to keep the economy in check. In
June alone there was a drop of
$120 million in Israel’s foreign
currency reserves Goldstein added.
A Cash Collection Campaign is to
get under way immediately follow
ing the holidays. The purpose,
Goldstein said, will be to collect as
much of the outstanding pledges as
possible. “Israel knows that they
can only depend on the Jews of the
free world and we cannot let them
down. Without our dollars NOW,
their basic human needs will be un-
fulfilled.”

they stated, “At this solemn mo
ment in Jewish history, we, the
Jewish people, are the one un
failing ally of Israel. Never before
have so many eyes been focused on
us — to see whether we shall
weaken in our faith — or whether
we shall live up to our heritage and
stand fast with our brothers and
sisters in Israel,
“We in Or VeShalom have
always demonstrated our solidari
ty with the State of Israel, and we
are positive that this year more
than ever our Israel Bond Cam

— the need is so great!” they con
