Shearith Israel,
to be held the week
end of Novem
ber 15-17.

that Rabbi Geffen will speak at
the Anniversary Banquet on Sun
day evening, Nov. 17.
Now serving as spiritual leader
of Congregation Beth Shalom in
Wilmington, Del., Rabbi Geffen is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis
Geffen of Atlanta and the grand
son of the late Rabbi Tobias
Geffen, who held the pulpit at
Shearith Israel for more than 60
years.
Born in Atlanta, Rabbi Geffen
attended Henry Grady High
School and was graduated from
Emory University in 1959. Active
in numerous student Jewish ac
tivities, he was international presi
dent of the Student Zionist
Organization in 1960-61. He was
ordained as a rabbi in 1965 at the
Jewish Theological Seminary of
America and held student pulpits
in Easton, Md., Statesville, N.C.,
and Weldon, N.C. In 1970, he
accepted the rabbinical post at
Beth Shalom.
Rabbi Geffen is listed in Who’s
Who in World Jewry, Who’s Who
in the World, published in
England, and Who's Who in the
East, 1975 edition. He was
honored as "Outstanding Young
Man of the Year” by the National
Junior Chamber of Commerce.
He has been a lecturer in Jewish
philosophy and rabbinics at the
Institute for Jewish Studies at the
Jewish Theological Seftiinary of
America, a visiting lecturer in
Medieval Jewish philosophy at the
Reconstructionist Rabbinical
College in Philadelphia and is the
Shlomo Carlebach will appear
in concert at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept.
29, at Shearith Israel Synagogue
under the sponsorship of the
Sisterhood. The entire community
is invited.
Carlebach, who says he believes
in music as “a communicant of un
said feelings, of untold truths”
added, “my concerts are not really
concerts . . . they’re like special
vitamins to expand your soul, your
Jewishness.”
The singer expressed concern
that Jewish people don’t believe in
themselves as much as they should.
“We are always looking down on
ourselves because we’re not doing
things like in the olden days. No,
we’rd not; for these are different
times.”
Mrs. Malcolm Minsk,
Sisterhood president, said, “Mr.
Carlebach carries the message that
Israel will be redeemed when
author of many articles and special
papers relating to Jewish history
and culture.
The three days of the celebration
have been designated as “Shearith
Israel Weekend” and will include a
number of special events to call
attention to Shearith Israel's
three-score-and-ten existence in
Atlanta.
