custom, it was forbidden to im
itate the Menorah, the seven-
branched candlestick of the
Temple. But there was no such
ban on creating a similar
shape with fewer or more
candleholders. So the Hanuka
Menorah was created with
eight candleholders plus the
Sham mas. This was to remind
us of the miraculous tiny cruse
of oil found by the Maccabees

the Kiddush and oil to light the
Hanuka lamp, he should buy the
oil, since it serves as a memorial
of the miracle of Hanuka.”
Two types of Hanukiyot
developed; the bench type was
small with a back that could be
secured to the wall or set on a
bench. The other, the candelabra
type, was larger and was for
synagogue service.
In the Middle Ages, when
Jews lived in special quarters of
the town known as ghettos, the
Hanukiya was often set outside
the doors or at windows. In
Venice, the Jews would row in
gondolas through their district,
greeting each illuminated house
with a blessing and a song. Soon,
though, it became a rule to keep
the Hanuka lights inside the
house, since the slightest breeze
would extinguish the flame.
