lighting and placement of the
Menorah. Women should fulfill
the commandment of kindling
the lights, for they, too, were in
volved in the miracle. The lights
may be kindled from sunset un
til the time when all movement
comes to an end in the market
place. It is well for each member
of the household to have a lamp
to kindle.
Because these lights are ho
ly, there should be no practical
use made of tWlh, which is
why the Shaw was was added
— for the task of kindling the
other eight. On Friday, the
Manuka lights are lit before
the Sabbath lights; and at the
end of the Sabbath day they
are lit after Havdala.
Our sages said that the
Hanuka lights should be placed
at the door of the house — out
side, and if a person lives in an
upper story, he should place the
Menorah ip the nearest window
to the public thoroughfare. In
time of danger, however, it may
be placed on the table and that
will be sufficient.
The eight tapers should be
placed in a straight row, since no
day of Hanuka is superior to
another Only the Shaw mas
shall stand above them all. The
lights should be kindled before
anyone in the household goes to
sleep.and money should be con
tributed to the community so
that all your brethren may
celebrate Hanuka.
Many poems have been
written about Hanuka, but a
special one for children was
written by the great Hebrew
poet, Haiyim Nachman Bialik.
