Sexual Revolution Threatens
Jewish Continuity, Rabbi Warns
by BEN GALLOB
A Florida Reform rabbi has
[ expressed the conviction that the
sexual revolution, beyond being
a total conflict with Jewish
morality eodes, poses a
“catastrophic” threat to Jewish
continuity which — unlike
assimilation, mixed marriage
and declining fertility — is one
m about which he feels the Jewish
f community is hugely unaware,
a Rabbi Herbert Baumgard
or made his concern public in an ar-
4 tkle in his Beth Am Bulletin in
#• Miami and amplified his views
3 in a telephone interview with the
g Jewish Telegraphic Agamy. The
thrust of his statement was that
the sexual revolution is exacer
bating the problem of assimila
tion, causing postponement of
marriage among young Jewish
adults, and ia a significant factor
in the declining birthrate of
American Jewry.
In his bulletin analysis, Rab
bi Baumgard described the
sexual revolution as one which
has replaOsd earlier standards
of restricting sex to marriage
with a new standard which, in
turn, “is already being
overwhelmed,” of reducing
man-woman ties to a "love
relationship.”
The rabbi asserted that many
young Jews, like many non-
Jewish young adults, support
the “love relationship” stan
dards “as strongly m some of us
used to support the sex end
marriage standard,” but there
doer not seem to be “complete
agreement about what a ‘love
relationship’ meats.” For some
young people, it means a “trial”
before marriage but for many
others it is "simply” a
relationship “in which you are
going steady with one person
whom you like rather much.”
Continuing, he added: “Next
month, you might not like him-
her that much, but right now
you do. Shortly after one breaks

up with this latter kind of ‘love
