Sexual Revolution
Continued
girl friend, so that one will not
be lonely or bored. When this
relationship ends, one goes on to
the next relationship, hoping
that it might be more satisfac
tory,”
He also noted — in what was
in effect a comment on the im
pact of the anonymity and
loneliness on thousands of young
adults, Jews and non-Jews, in
America's urban centers — the
problem of those young adultB
unable to find a sex partner, “the
legion of young people who are
not even so ‘fortunate’ as those
who, at least, have a continuing
relationship with one person.”
Those young adults are involved
iii “fly-by-night” sexual
associations in a "constant
stream of ‘helloes’ and ‘good
byes’ and experiments.”
He summarised "the net
result” of the sexual revolution
as a decline in the number of
marriages, “the delaying of
marriages, the decline in
families with children, the
mingling of people of different
religious faiths, and a surging
stream of people who use each
other as long ias the situation
permits.’*
“AH of these facts together are
disastrous for the prospect of the
continuation of the Jewish peo
ple and the Jewish faith," he
said. “Our youngsters are either
not getting married” or getting
married so late in life “that they
will have few children, if any.
The already small Jewish com
munity in America is conse
quently rapidly declining and its
very existence is challenged.”

He declared that “quite apart
from whether the sexual revolu
tion is moral or good for society,
is the question whether it is good
for the Jewish people. The
answer is clear! For us, it is
catastrophic.”
Rabbi Baumgard told the JTA
that his views were based on his
work as rabbi of a large con
gregation which, he cited as an
example, has been confirming
100 or more children at the tenth
grade, in their 15th year, many
of whom are now in their 30s
and would normally be married.
He said that, in fact, “I am spen
ding less and less time marrying
eouples.” On the basis of age
progressions among children of
his congregants, he said, U P
should be performing 60 to 65
marriages a year and I’m not”
lie said there was no evidence
that he would have “a big rush”
into marriage eventually by the
young Jews. “I am watching the
young ladies who are simply not
getting married,” he said.
He said that he taught courses
at the University of Florida and
regularly visited young
members of his congregation
who have gone to other cities for
their college education, and that
he thus “met a lot of kids; they
talk to me.” He agreed that the
sexual revolution reflected a
vast social change in the United
States but he insisted that
parents must make it clear to
their children that they have an
obligation to the future of their
people.
“I find in teenagers a certain
idealism and loyalty” to which
efforts are addressed in Beth
Atp religious school classes. He
said “we have open discussion in
confirmation classes” that such
sexual liaisons “are bad for the
Jewish future,” but he conoeded
that “I don’t know what will
come of our teachings and
appeals,” insisting, however,
that he was an “optimist”
He said he was “substantially
on my own” in hiB efforts to
make Jewish parents and Jewish
community leaders aware of the
impact of the sexual revolution
and the need to cope with it. He
said there was “a reluctance on
the part of many rabbis to face
the catastrophic implications” of
that revolution.
