Georgia boasts one of the
oldest Jewish congregations in
the country, Congregation
Mickve Israel in Savannah.
Dating to 1733, Mickve Israel is
one of six congregations in the
country dating to Colonial days.
Its present spiritual leader is
Rabbi Saul Rubin.
Congregation Mickve Israel
traces its origin to a group of
forty-three Jews who sailed
from England in January 1733,
about • month pjrior to
Oglethorpe’s landing^ Savan
nah. These colonics came ashore
on July H and shortly thereafter
formed a- congregation which
they called K. K. Mickva Israel.
They brought with them a cir
cumcision box and a Sephar
Torah, which the congregation
still maintains. Soon services
were held ip a rented house on
Ka$etSquare.
; Haring the 1780’s other
Jewish colonists joined their co
religionists here. For some years
the Savannah Jews were sharply
dividsd. Those, of Germanic
origins, Ashkenazic, were strict
in religious observances and
those of Mediterranean origin,
Sephardic, tended toward
leniency. The two groups were
unable to cooperate in building a
synagogue. *
By 1740, only three or four
adult Jews remained in Savan
nah. The Spanish incursion at
Fort Frederica brought fear of
an inquisition among the
Sephardic Jews at Savannah;
the German families, including
Benjamin Sheftall and Abraham
Minis* remained, v .
\Pth the .defeat of \the
Spanish, many Jews returned
from Carolina, and with others,
strengthened their community.
With the shift to direct rule by
the English Crown, the local
Jewry improved and on the eve
of the Revolution, estimates
ranged from six to forty

families. In 1773, Mordecai Shef
tall established a perpetual trust
to which he deeded a tract of
land in Savannah for use as a
synagogue and a cemetery. The
High Holy Days Services were
held In Sheftall’s home rid an
attempt tor 1 reorganize K. K.
Mickva Israel was made. The
Revolution interrupted the
progress because many
members took an active part in
the republic’s fight for freedom.
Mickve Israel was the first
Hebrew congregation to con
gratulate President Washington
upon his inauguration. He
responded,. “May the same
wonder-working Deity, who long
since delivered the Hebrews
from their Egyptian oppressors,
planted them in the promised
land, whose providential agency
has lately been conspicuous in
establishing these tlnited States
aa an independent nation, still
continue to water them with the
dews of Heaven, and make the
inhabitants of every denomina
tion partake in the temporal and
spiritual blessings of that peo
ple, whose God is Jehovah.”
On November 30,1790, Gover
nor Edward Telfair granted the
congregation a perpetual
charter. In 1820 the first syn
agogue building in Georgia was
erected on the corner of
Whitaker and Perry Lane. The
present edifice on Monterey
Square was consecrated in 1878.
Of unique design for a syn
agogue, it is English Gothic with
apse and transept, vaulted
ceilings, and stained glass win
dows. In the Mordecai Sheftall
Memorial Hall is a museum dis
playing memorabilia of the con
gregation.
