Ted Turner employees'take exemption'
Editor:
We, who are Jews, must take
exception to the over-reaction of
the Jewish Community to the
facetious remarks made by Ted
Turner on April 5th at a
breakfast meeting.
As six Jewish employees of
this man we find him fallible,
but not anti-Semitic. Speaking
from combined experience of 27
years of working with Ted
Turner we know his character.
Ted Turner consistently
proves his open-mindedness
with his unbiased hiring prac
tices, his commitment to chari
ty, his whole-hearted civic pride
and even his choice of personal
advisers. He takes much pride in
awards received from Hadassah
and the Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation.
We are concerned that his
remarks, taken out of context, mis
lead the uninformed about the
enigma that is Ted Turner. This
man is an off-the-cuff speaker,
and he is good at it. But extem
poraneous presentations have
disadvantages. A speaker may
fail to preface a joke or facetious
remark in such a way as to in
advertently mislead a listener.
Ted Turner has publicly
apoli^ized fqr his remarks. His

It is unfortunate that Mr.

this letter, obviously without
having read my speech. I am
sure that you, as a newspaper

All violence wrong
Editor:
Regarding the article entitled
“Nazis try to make comeback in
Frisco” on April 8:.
From Pharoah to Hitler — to
present, we as a people have
always suffered but have always
pulled through and we have
always set our values and goals
above all else. This is why ar
ticles like the above mentioned
disturb me so.
Adolf Hitler used many tac
tics to achieve his deathly hold
on a great mass of people. One of
these methods, was the burning
of books — all books. This task
was accomplished so well that in
the end propaganda that only a
mad-man could have dreamed of
existed.
This isolated case of book bur
nings in San Francisco may not
be on the scale of WWII, but it is
along the same lines. A Nazi
bookstore was attacked and
burned out of pure hatred. Have
we not learned from the past?
When will we start to fight back
with our minds instead of our
hands?
If book burning under Adolf
Hitler was wrong, then this too
is wrong! We have a system of
government and laws in this
country that enable us to speak
out and protect our rights. It is a
unique condition, and I propose
that we exploit this alternative
to its fullest extent.

apology has been accepted by
Stu Lewengrub of the A.D.L.
A student of history, Turner
understands the turbulent
history of the Jewish people and
he is sincere when he says,
“Anti-Semitism is no joking
matter.” His actions in our
behalf speak far louder than hk
ill-conceived remark.
It k our contention that Ted
Turner has been — and will re
main — on the side of the Jewish
Community and on the side of
every individual, regardless of
origin.
