"Practically Invisible"

Political wives in Israel:
shadows in the background
by Nechemle Meyers
REHOVOT, Israel - With the
exception of Leah Rabin, the
wives of Israeli politicians are
practically invisible.
Even now, in the midst of a
hard-fought political campaign,
they remain very much in the
background. They don’t appear
on election platforms in the Bet
ty Ford or Rosalyn Carter
manner, and most of them even
keep out of camera range.
As a result, the average Israeli
wouldn’t recognize Mrs. Peres
(wife of the Premier) or Mrs.
Allon (wife of the Foreign
Minister) should he pass one of
them in the street. Indeed, he
might not even know whether
there is a Mrs. Peres or a Mrs.
Allon.
In the opinion of Edit Harish,
whose husband Micah is a rising
star in the Labor Alignment,
this is the way the situation
should remain. “Micah,” she
says, “is a political figure and
the voters have a right to know
about his activities. However, I
am not a politician and I have no
intention of exposing my private
life to public scrutiny.”
Met In Army
The wives of Israeli politicians
typically meet their future
husbands when both are serving
in the Army. Such was the case
with the Ya’acobis. Gad, now
minister of transport, was an of
ficer in the same Signal Corps
unit where Tova worked as a
secretary.
Now, 21 years and 3 children
later, Tova sees her role primari
ly as that of a faithful wife, one
who takes *11 the responsibility
for running the house so that
“Gad will have a quiet and warm
refuge to which he can retreat
from the tumult of public life.”
Rivka Ben-Porat, has also
willingly played second fiddle to
her politician husband since
they first met in a War of
Independence infantry unit.
This is not to say that they have
not had their disagreements,
but only on one politically-
related issue has Rivka defied
her husband.
The clash took place some 25
years ago, when Mordehai was
Mayor of Or Yehuda, a Tel Aviv
suburb then inhabited by highly
discontented immigrants from
Iraq. Mordehai bore the brunt of
their discontent, but it also hit at
his wife and children. His eldest
daughter, for example, would
often come home crying after be
ing abused by other children at
the local school.
This was too much for Rivka.
She demanded that the girl be
sent to study elsewhere, despite
her husband’s fear that this
would undermine his position in
the community. But when she
remained adamant, he finally
agreed.
It was the wife who acqui
esced in another family when the
demands of politics clashed with
the apparent interests of the
children. Knesset Member
Yossie Sarid decided some years
ago that it would help his career
if he and his family moved from
a comfortable Tel Aviv suburb to
the rugged Galilee development
town of Kiryat Shmoneh, then
under frequent terrorist at
tack. “For a good many months,"
Dorit recalls, “I felt sorry for my
children and no less sorry for
myself. I was pregnant; I had no
job; and I had no friends.”
Today, however,Dorit is hap
py in Kiryat Shmoneh. She is a
community figure in her own
right and manager of the town’s
handsome new hotel. In fact,
Dorit now even appears on
television from time to time,
though not nearly as often as
Yossie.
Occasionally the situation is
reversed, and it is the wife who
is the politician and TV per
sonality, while the husband
remains in the shadows. The
Alonis are a case in point.
Knesset Member Shulamit,
hot-tempered head of the Civil
Rights Movement, is one of the
country’s most famous per
sonalities, while her husband
Reuven, a senior Government
administrator, is able but almost
unknown. ^
However, the parallel with
other political families is not
quite complete. It is still
Shulamit who takes care of the
house and does the cooking.
Reuven, though cognizant of his
wife’s special responsibilities as
a public figure, does no more
than bring her breakfast in bed.
