Israel Bonds to honor Levitas
Fourth District Congressman
Elliott H. Levitas will be
honored at the annual Atlanta-
Israel Dinner of State on Sun
day, May 29, at the Hyatt Regen
cy Atlanta.
Congressman Levitas will be
the first recipient in the
Southeast of the Jerusalem An
niversary Award. “This special
award is being conferred upon
him for his efforts in the cause
of humanitarianism, his com
munal and civic leadership, and
his staunch support of the State
of Israel in the United States
Congress," said Dr. Marvin
Goldstein Atlanta Israel Bond
Chairman.
A native of Atlanta, Levitas
was educated in the Atlanta
public schools. He earned a
Bachelor’s Degree and a law
degree from Emory University.
He won a Rhodes Scholarship
and earned the M.A. degree in
Law from Oxford University in
England. He did further study in
law at the University of
Michigan.
Congressman Levitas served
for two years as a Lieutenant in
the United States Air force and
later received an honorable dis
charge from the Air Force
Reserves with the rank of Cap
tain.
Levitas was elected to the
Rep. Elliott Levitas
Georgia House of Represen
tatives in 1965 and served for
five consecutive terms. In 1974,
he was elected to serve the
Fourth Congressional District in
the United States House of
Representatives.
Congressman Levitas has
been very active in the cause of
Soviet Jewry and through his ef
forts, Boris Levitas, no relation,
was able to receive his exit visa
to emigrate to Israel, where he
was able to join his family.
Bonds conference set
for May 1 in Atlanta
Israel Bond Leaders from the
Southeast will gather Sunday,
May 1, at the Atlanta American
Motor Hotel, for the Southern
States Regional Israel Bond
Conference.
Larry Frank, regional chair
man for Israel Bonds, said that
the leaders from nine southern
states were invited to participate
in the meeting by Nahum As tar,
Consul General of Israel in
Atlanta.
“Whatever direction events in
the Middle East take this year,..
. the economic condition of Israel
will have a decisive role to play,”
Astar said. “This places the
Israel Bond program in a posi
tion of unique and heightened
importance. For Israel Bonds
have been the mainstay and
backbone of the country’s in
dustrial development
throughout the past quarter of a
century,” the Consul General
continued.
Dr. Marvin Goldstein, chair
man of the Atlanta Israel Bond
Committee, will serve as chair
man for the host city.
The conference will start at
10:00 a.m. and conclude at 4:00
p.m. Consul General Astar will
be the main speaker at a
luncheon to be held that day.

Levitas is a member of the
Atlanta, Georgia, and American
bar associations, the Lawyers
Club of Atlanta, the Atlanta and
DeKalb County Chamber of
Commerce. He is a past presi
dent of the Emory Law Alumni
Association and is active in the
Emory University Council of
Boy Scouts. He is a member of
the board of directors of the
Atlanta Jewish Community
Center and the Atlanta Jewish
Welfare Federation.
Levitas is married to the
former Barbara Hillman of
Atlanta. They have two
daughters, Karen and Susan,
and a son, Kevin. The family
belongs to the Ahavath Achim
Synagogue.

Bonds group
David Rivlin, Ambassador of
Israel to Norway, will be the
special guest on Tuesday even
ing, May 10, at a reception for
members of Atlanta’s Prime
Minister’s Club and the Am
bassador’s Society of Trustees.
This meeting, at the home of
Gerald Cohen, chairman of the
Ambassador’s Society of
Trustees, is in conjunction with
the Elliott Levitas Tribute
Dinner to take place on May 29.
In a career spanning more
than three decades, Ambassador
Rivlin has been a soldier, cor
respondent and diplomat. He is a
sixth generation Sabra.
Prior to assuming his current
post, he was Consul General of
Israel in New York and Mon
treal, and Consul in
Philadelphia. He also served as
political advisor to Foreign
Minister Abba Eban and as the
official spokesman of the
Foreign Ministry and director of
its press department.
