of West Germany's parliament.
She slapped the Chancellor across
the face and shouted, “Nazi, Nazi!”
She was promptly thrown in jail.
But on that day, Nov. 7, 1968, she
had dramatically focused world
attention to Kiesingcr*s former
role as Hitler’s director of foreign
propaganda. Less than a year later.
Kiesinger was turned out of office.
Beate Klarsfeld was born in
Berlin in 1939, the year Hitler’s
Germany invaded Poland. When
she met her husband. Serge
Klarsfeld, a French Jew, she knew
nothing about the Holocaust. The
extermination of six million Jews
became a reality to her when her
husband related the details of his
father's murder at Auschwitz and
his own nearly fatal escape.
Today, Beate Klarsfeld assumes
a personal crusade to call attention
to unpunished Nazi war criminals.
Remaining a Protestant, she has
staged demonstrations, published,
lectured and traveled to expose
these criminals, many of whom she
claims have been protected in
Germany and have even become

Mrs. Klarsfeld is the author of
“Wherever They May Be,” a book
documenting her anti-Nazi
crusade. She explained, “As a
German, I feel I must help bring to
justice those Germans who were
responsible for killing and
torturing so many innocent people
during World War II.”
The 37-year-old mother of two
said that she lectures in order to
raise money so that she and her
lawyer-husband can press their
fight against ex-Nazis in court full
time. They fight as individuals,
backed by no particular party or
organization.
Mrs. Klarsfeld boldly accepts
the consequences of her actions.
Her mother, who lives in Berlin, is
ashamed and embarrassed by her
daughter. Many Germans believe
that Mrs. Klarsfeld is a disgrace to
her homeland.
Yet, despite these bitter
consequences, Mrs. Klarsfeld is
pleased by what she views as the
success of her efforts.
She continues to fight, despite
the fact that some of her efforts
have been futile, for “the
