Jewish girl bounces
into
by I.oring Letter
If all Jewish girls were as pretty
and vibrant as Miss Lori Ann
Agron, Portnoy wouldn't have had
a complaint. The 20-year-old is
one of the Kansas City Kings’
“Glitter Girls,” a busty bevy of
eight college-age or older girls who
entertain audiences during time
outs at the Kings' basketball
games.
The Glitter Girls are among the
growing corps of “entertainment
troupes” sponsored by sports
teams across the country,
according to Miss Agron, who is
currently working towards a
cosmetology license. The Glitter
Girls are dancers; their duties arc
not lead cheers, but to perform
dance routines, skits, some
singing, and give the crowds a little
cheesecake to go along with the hot
dogs and beer. The girls also do
promotions, like bank openings.
Miss Agron said that the Kings
are the second professional
basketball team in the country to
create a troupe, joining the
Washington Bullettes, but the
competition is already fierce
amongst football teams. There are
the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders,
the Chicago Honeybears, the
Miami Dolphin Dolls, the Denver
Bronco Belles, and the
Washington Redskinettes, to
name a few.
These sideline sexpots have
created quite a stir in professional
sports, and Miss Agron said that
the Glitter Girls, who arein their
first season, have already caught
some of the controversy. She
reported that a male radio
announcer accused them of being
a “sexist, group who are being
exploited.”
“But I don't feel exploited, I
think it’s great fun,” protested
Lori. “Everyone is very nice to us,
and the girls have a wonderful time
together. Besides, public exposure
never hurt anyone,” continued
Miss Agron, the smallest Glitter
Girl at S’l” tall and 100 pounds.
The girls are paid $12 a game,
with a $100 bonus for performing
at 33 of 35 games. Including free
tickets, free parking, and pre-game
dinners, the girls will make about
$1250 a season.
Public exposure is not new to
Lori, a 1975 graduate of Center
High School who has worked for
three summers as a dancer at
Worlds of Fun. She choreo
graphed and danced in three
annual high school musicals, and
was a member of the University of
Kansas Dance Company, while
she was a student there for three
semesters.
She began taking dance lessons
at the age of four and then studied
ballet at the UMKC Conservatory
of Music. A member of the

children’s chorus at Starlight
Theatre, she has studied tap, jazz,
ballet, acrobatics, and modern
dance, as welf as various special
styles and techniques.
Dancing it not her only interest.
Miss Agron participated in speech
contests in high school, and won
awards in the B'nai B'rith Girls
story-telling contest as a member
'•of Shoshana BBG. She was a
confirmand of Beth Shalom
Synagogue, where she became a
Bat Mitzva.
But dancing is her over-riding
passion. “I don’t intend to ever
stop dancing,” she adamantly
stated, but admitted that her
“desire for security” prevents her
from pursuing it as a sole
profession.
Her dream is to consolidate her
interests in cosmetology and
dance, and eventually open a
salon-health spa, where men and
women can come “to get
everything in shape.” She sees this
as a further extension of her belief
that everyone has the potential to
be attractive. “If people take care
of themselves with proper exercise
and diet, they are going to feel
good, and if they feel good, they’re
going to look good,” she said.
The crowds seem to love the
Glitter Girls, who elicit many
comments from the spectators.
One man said, “Sports are dying,
but the girls are getting better every
day." Another claimed, “1 don’t
like basketball, I come just to
watch the Glitter Girls.”
But perhaps the most honest
comment came from one woman
spectator who said: “I hate them. I
wish I was built like that."
