The strangest caravan ever to
pass through these parts paused in
Jerusalem on a recent Sunday-
First on Mount Scopus in the
afternoon, and, as the sun set,
inside the Knesset building, for a
gala dinner in the Chagall Hall.
It was the “Sinatra Caravan,” a
group of some 200 weary travellers
from the deserts of Las Vegas and
the foothills of Hollywood. This
was their big hour for Frankie in
Jerusalem—dedication day of the
million dollar Frank Sinatra
International Student Center at
the Hebrew University’s Mount
Scopus campus.
The idea for the center was born
in Los Angeles. That city's branch
of the Friends of the Hebrew
University formed a group of
“Friends of Frank Sinatra.” The
aim was to finance a much-needed
building on Mount Scopus where
all student activity offices would be
housed.
Agreeing to lend his name to the
effort, the 61-year-old crooner
went even further. He offered to fly
into Jerusalem any one of his
friends, and pay for bed and
breakfast too, if the friend pledged
$2,500 “or more” to the Hebrew
University.

Frank Sinatra and friends settle into an IDF helicopter on their
way to visit an air force base somewhere in Israel.
Frank Sinatra being Frank
Sinatra, the idea caught on swiftly.
A “Sinatra Caravan" was soon
formed. Setting up camp at the
Jerusalem Hilton, the caravan
began a week’s extensive tour of
Israel and meetings with its leaders
before topping it off with the
dedication of the student center-
and the Hebrew University’s
recognition dinner for the caravan
at the Knesset.
Knesset veterans at the dinner
could not recall such a lavish
occasion. On the dais, with Frank
and Barbara Sinatra and daughter
Tina, were the American
ambassador and Mrs. Samuel
Lewis, Labor and Social Affairs
Minister Israel Katz, HU board of
governors chairman Sam
Rothberg, university officials and
leaders of the school’s American
and California “friends”
organizations.
In the audience were Mr. and
Mrs. Gregory Peck; beautiful
Joanna Carson and husband
Johnny, host of the “Tonight”
show; Ed McMahon, accompan
ied by his wife; and a dazzling
array of some of the greatest
personalities in the fast-moving
financial - legal - entertainment
world symbolized by Frank
Sinatra.
Rising to speak last, Sinatra
quipped, ”Boy, this sure is a tough
act to follow!”
Describing it as “a spectacular |
day for Barbara, Tina and myself,”
Sinatra said he was grateful to all
caravan members because J
“through your efforts my name I
will forever be remembered when
these young students gather in this]
garden of love we call Israel.'
In the afternoon dedication
ceremonies, Flank recalled hif
Italian ancestry and the fact tha
his father, an unschooled, pool
imigrant from Sicily, had instilled
the love of learning in him.
One of the university officials 1
noted that Sinatra “is not the first}
Roman to capture Mount Scopus"
since, according td~ historians, 4
Emperor Titus used Mount
Scopus as a launching point for his
final attack on the city in 70 CE.
Hearing this, Sinatra whispered,
“Had I been around then, I
wouldn’t have let him do that!”
