New AJCC branch facility
groundbreaking on April 30
by Marilyn Benveniste
Miniature shovels will be given
to all spectators so they can
participate in groundbreaking for
the new Zaban Branch of the
Atlanta Jewish Community
Center at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30,
as the AJCC formally launches the
building of their new branch at
Zaban Park.
Nickel hot dogs and drinks, long
walks around the lake, and
program demonstrations will
complete the day!
Many spectators will no doubt
have strong feelings of nostalgia as
another step forward is made on
behalf of the changing needs of the
Atlanta Jewish community.
Some participants will no doubt
recall their younger days playing
basketball at the first facility, the
Jewish Educational Alliance, that
opened in 1910- at 318 Capitol
Avenue, S.E. (now the site of the
Atlanta Stadium!!)
Others might recall that large
old home that was used beginning
in 1956 at the site of our present
facility at 1745 Peachtree Road,
N.E. By 1956, the old home was
torn do wn to make room for the all
brick facility on the same site.
The most recent memories will
be attached to the building of the
new wing at the Peachtree Road
site which incorporated the new
gym, additional meeting rooms,
and the new wing to the early
childhood department.
Now, a “you are there” feeling
will prevail at the groundbreaking
of the branch facility to be
completed by fall, 1979. Spectators
will witness the beginning of the
“Two In 79” theme to again meet
the needs of our growing and
sprawling Jewish population in
Atlanta.
The Zaban Branch will contain a
gym, tennis courts, raquetball
courts, an early childhood
department and rooms to facilitate
meetings and various programs.
Honorary chairmen of the
fundraising campaign are Max
Kuniansky, Milton Weinstein, and
Irwin Zaban. Serving as
fundraising co-chairmen are
Sidney Feldman and Bernard
Howard.
The entire Jewish community is
invited to join this historic
occasion at 3 p.m., April 30, at
Zaban Park, 5342 Tilly Mill Road,
N.E.
The bitter herbs come in
many shapes and colors
We all know that Maror, the
bitter herb, is an integral part of
the Paisover Seder. World Over
Magazine offers some insight into
the use of maror during the Seder.
When the rabbis of the Mishnah
were asked just what the bitter
herb was, their answer was a list of
five vegetables: hazeret, olshin,
tamcha, harhavina, and maror.
The problem is that these rabbis
lived in Eretz Israel over 2,000
years ago. Today, we are not
positive that we know what these
five are, or whether they can be
found in all the countries to which
Jews have wandered since then.
We really do not know, for
example, what tamcha is, though
some translators of the Mishnah
call it horseradish. Hazeret is
thought to have been some sort of
lettuce, and there are many who
use romaine lettuce on the Seder
plate. In modern Hebrew, maror is
used to refer to horseradish, which
is probably the most common
American and European choice
for the Seder plate. The taste of
horseradish is not really bitter,
however, rather it is sharp, so let's
examine some of the other choices
listed in the Mishnah.
Olesh is chicory. The green
leaves of the chicory plant peak
through the wet earth around
Hanuka. By Passover, a stalk
develops, and it sprouts leaves that
are too bitter to eat. The same is
true of harhavina and maror
(called dardar today). The
bitterness of the leaves of these
plants can only be removed by
pickling or cooking the leaves. But
the Mishnah is very careful on this
point. The obligation of Maror is
only fulfilled if the vegetables are
fresh or dry.
The symbol is double. The
Children of Israel had no time
that first Passover for cooked
vegetables, only fresh-picked
salad. These plants may have been
growing wild outside their doors.
The bitterness of the plants
reminds us of the bitterness of
slavery.
There is another reason the
rabbis looked ito these five
vegetables. In the beginning of
their growth, the five are soft, and
even sweet enough to eat fresh.
Later they become hard and bitter.
So, too, were the Egyptians. When
Jacob came down to Egypt with
his family, the Egyptians were kind
to them. But many years later, the
Egyptians hardened. Then they
oppressed the children of Israel.
So, said the Rabbis, “See this bitter
herb whose beginning is sweet and
whose end is bitter—thus were the
Egyptians." (Mishnah, Pesahim
2,6)
Hundreds of years later, while
the Eastern Europe or North
Africa (or later in the Americas),
Jews had to find a “maror.” Some
of these five vegetables were
unknown, others were not grown
outside of Israel. So new bitter
herbs were used.
