BBYOers dance for $$$
by Daniel Bogart
Atlanta Council BBYO held its
third annual Muscular Dystrophy
Dance-A-Thon April I and 2, from
8 p.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday
at the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center.
The 108 sponsored dancers,
more than in previous years, were a
young group, consisting mostly of
ninth and tenth graders. All the
participants and organizers were
nervous, anticipating the
beginning of the twenty-four-hour
dance.
Planning for the Dance-A-Thon
began six weeks earlier, with
coordinators Jed Mescon, Debbie
Levine, Larry Appel, and Babs
Karesh choosing their steering
committee. BBYO members
purchased the Dance-A-Thon
packets, containing sponsor sheets
and envelopes. Sponsors, pledging
certain amounts of money for each
hour danced, syere then sought.
Bands, who were willing to play for
free, were located.
The dancing began at 8 p.m.
with music to a disco system. Soon
afterwards the first of three bands.
Storm, began to perform.
“Some of you may not
remember me," was how AZA
Haganah AZA
Swim-a-thon
Haganah AZA held its second
Swim-a-thon on Jan. 29. Nearly
$700.00 was raised for the Atlanta
Jewish Welfare Federation.
Muscular Dystrophy Association.
American Cancer Society, and
Haganah.
Haganah members endured
three to four hours of swimming at
the Atlanta Jewish Community
Center pool to raise the money.
Leon Egozi led all swimmers in
money raised with $372, and Mitch
Wender swam the most laps. 175.
The first Swim-a-thon raised
$165.56 for ISF
Earlier in the year. Haganah
helped raise $60.00 for Charles
Carouth. an asthma patient who
needed funds for treatment in a
Denver hospital. Haganah AZA, a
chapter of only twelve members,
has raised nearly $1,500 for
different chanties within the past
year.
Ahavath Achim Youth

Life Member Joey Sherr began his
explanation to the dancers of why
they were there and in praise of
what they were doing. Joey, who
himself has Muscular Dystrophy,
originated the BBYO M.D.
Dance-A-Thon three years ago as
Council Social Awareness
chairman and senior in Thomas
Makover AZA. His talk served as
ample reminder to the dancers as
to the purpose of the Dance-A-
Thon. Joey is now attending St.
Andrews College in North
Carolina on an academic honor
scholarship.
The dance was structured to
allow a 10 minute break for every
hour danced. A three hour sleep
break was provided in the early
morning, a chance to swim or take
showers, followed by breakfast.
During the dance, there were
always sponsored dancers
standing to the side of the dance
floor, and some sitting in chairs
around it. By noon of Sunday the
number had increased. Dancers
were moving freely in and out of
the auditorium. The attempt to
halt this movement and keep the
dancers dancing slowed as the
tiring hours proceeded. Some of
the lack of control was due to the
ages of the dancers. “They were
younger this year; it took more to
control them," stated coordinator
Debbie Levine. Cheryl Schneider,
an MDA worker who assisted in
the planning of the Dance-A-
Thon, commented that “the fund
raising was good, but the
organization and leadership could
have been better."
At 4:45 p.m. Sunday, the noon
total of $5235 was raised to $6332.
The final hours created a new surge
of energy among the dancers, the
majority of whom did dance as
much as possible, and thus fought
exhaustion for the last three hoars.
Storm, which had come back for
a second performance, abruptly
quit playing during the middle of
their performance over a lighting
disagreement. Their hasty
departure was taken good-
naturedly by the participants.
When the final hours were over
and the last dance had been played,
the dazed and worn out dancers sat
down, gave applause to the
coordinators, steering committee,
and themselves, and waited for the
final tally. The amount totaled
$7537, breaking last year’s mark of
$6555. Raising $36.76 an hour,
Ellen Zaglin had collected the most
money and had won a six day
Fairway cruise. The general feeling
towards the Dance-A-Thon was
well expressed by a tired senior,
Stuart Tuck, who felt that “the
Dance-A-Thon was good, and
although there were some minor
problems, we accomplished our
ggal. which was to raise money for
MDA."
