Kosher hotels making
Miami Beach comeback
by Elaine Berwitt
For all of its reported hard times
of late, the Miami hotel scene is
certainly a lively one from the
stand-point of kosher hostelries.
More than ever are now
operating here, and almost
without exception, are enjoying a
thriving business. New ones are
opening all the time, having been
converted from non-kosher
operations. One wonders why?
In talking with Ricky Schechter
of the Caribbean Hotel, he said.
“Many people who usually come
to Miami are now going to the
(Caribbean) Islands instead. But
kosher people can’t go to the
islands as there are few kosher
hotels there, so they continue to
come here. We have people coming
from Ireland, Montreal, Toronto,
Belgium, Switzerland, England
and Argentina."
Wantin^(^fin£ouMnorejibout^
this type of experience, I contacted
Eric Jacobs of the Tarleton Hotel,
who was my gracious host for the
day at his lovely kosher hotel, in
which he recently invested one-half
million dollars for modernization
Seventy-five percent of his
guests return each year, and 40
people like it so well that they stay
the year Tound. The hotel caters to
senior citizens, but young people
join the group at holiday times.
1 attended a Sabbath service at
the hotel to say Kaddish for my
father. Upon meeting Rev.
Chirimsky, who is in charge of the
services, I was impressed with his
friendliness, sincerity and devotion
to Judaism; this made for an
especially meaningful service.
The sanctuary was adorned with
Sabbath candles which were lit
personally by the women guests. A
delicious, sumptuous Sabbath
meal followed, served in lovely,
tastefulsurroundings^^^^^
Pesach prices vary In Israel
TEL AVIV, (J TA)—Israelis preparing for the Passover holidays
could hardly believe their eyes. The prices of many Passover foods
are going down, not up as is normally the case at this season. The
large supermarket chains announced they would lower prices in
order to increase sales and to prevent high mark-ups by smaller
merchants. The prices of wines, sugar and meat are down. But the
prices of matzo is up 45 percent over last year.
The next day, for a change of
pace, I thought I'd visit some of the
large Kosher hotels. I noticed
quite a few young people at these
places and bringing their children,
too; this seems to point to a
renewed interest in traditional
Judaism. Families live their
religion, together—and like it, too.
You’ll find every facet of living
in these hotels. For instance, if girl
watching is your field of expertise,
you'll notice that our Jewish gals
are real winners in the fashion
game, with their perky tennis
outfits and snappy beach attire.
For religious services these same
girls can bi„ found dressed
demurely, wearing high-styled,
modern wigs.
I
The majority of the Kosher hotel
guests do seem to attend Sabbath
and holiday services.
Alex Simlow, owner of the
Crown Hotel, adds a meaningful
dimension. He says, “we sell from
10 to 15 Aliyas a week, ranging
from $10 to $100. This money is
then donated to a worthwhile
Jewish cause.
