The Old New York Book Shop
is not like your typical bookstore,
nor does owner Cliff Graubart
want it to be.
Besides being a place to find a
book which is out-of-print or one
for which you???ve been searching a
long time, many people use the
book shop, in Graubart???s words, as
???a pit stop to use the phone or
drink a cup of coffee???
Thirty thousand books cram the
rafters of the old blue house with
yellow trim located on Juniper
Street and Graubart knows every
book he has.
???Anyone can walk in here and
ask for any book and I???ll know if I
have it. Since I put everything on
the shelf, I can also tell the
customer where the book is,???
Graubart said.
Seven rooms are filled to the
brim with books, everything from
American literature, some with
signatures of famous authors, to
over 300 cookbooks.
Every book is in a specific
category and in addition, Graubart
sells many letters signed by such
people as John F. Kennedy and
Lyndon Johnson.
In one room are rows and rows
of coffee cups with a different
person???s name engraved on each
one.
???These coffee cups are for my
friends, so they can feel free to
come by any time. Of course if
you???re new, then you can have the
cup with ???yours???engraved on it,??? he
said as he offered me some coffee
in a ???yours??? mug.
Besides coming by for coffee,
many people drop in to chat or to
see what new ???findings" Graubart
might have unearthed. He
encourages his customers to sit
down and read or thumb through
the books they are thinking of
purchasing.

???They need to know what
they???re buying. It???s not like buying
a new book. You wouldn???t believe
how excited people get over some
of the old books,??? he said.
How did Graubart get into the
business of selling old and rare
books?
???Well my father was in the fur
business in New York. He and my
mother were born in Poland,
although they didn't know each
pther there. My father moved to
France and later went to Palestine
as an Olympic swimmer
representing France in the
Maccabiah games. He met my

mother there and in 1937, they
came to Brooklyn. I was born in
1941, very independent and not a
very orthodox Jew. Now (hat
they???re- retired, my parents have
moved back to Israel.
???My father was in the fur
business and that's what he wanted
me to do. Well, I got drafted into
the army and was stationed in
Germany and Augusta, Ga..
instead of Vietnam. When I got
out, I decided to move to Atlanta
with 3$00 old books I had
accumulated and start a book
store. A friend of my father's in
New York used to collect books so
that???s what got me started,??? he
said.
How does Graubart decide what
books to add to his stock?
???I usually buy collections or
complete libraries. When someone
wants to sell a collection, it takes
me about 10 minutes to look over
200 books and tell them how much
I???ll pay. Most of the time I give the
price and they accept. But on
occasion a lady might think she???s
_ got King Solomon's Mine in her
living room, like finding gold in the
attic. Just because a book is old
doesn???t mean it???s worth anything.
See this book,??? he said holding up
an old tattered volume, ???it was
written in 1799 but I'm selling it for
$5 because it???s in lousy shape.???
In Graubart???s book shop he also
has a section of Judaic books
written about, as he puts it, ???the
chosen.??? He has found that a
surprising number of Christians
are interested in the books about
Judaica. But he has found all types
are interested in old and rare
books??????from the doctor to the
blue collar worker."
The Old New York Book Shop
is Graubart???s life and means of
support and he obviously likes
what he is doing.
???You just have to decide what
kind of lifestyle you want. If you
sell diamonds or tires, you can he
rich. But I'm not into the book
business to make lots of money,"
he said.
With so many books at his
fingertips, how many books has
Graubart actually read?
???No more than any normal
person. I read before I go to bed.
How many hooks do you read? I
probably read the same amount.
It???s just like a tire salesman. How
many tires can he really use
himself?"
