Polls shows Carter’s
support 'zero’
Jewish
by Wolf BUtier
WASHINGTON—An unpub
lished Louis Harm poll shows that
President Jimmy Carter’s
popularity among American Jew
has dropped to practically zero.
The poll, circulated confident
ially, is said to have stunned key
White House officials. During the
1976 presidential election. Carter
won about 70 percent of the Jewish
vote, compared to about 30
percent going to Gerald Ford
According to sources who have
seen the secret polTs results, only
one-tenth of one percent of those
American Jews questioned said
that they support Carter.
The poll was not commissioned
by the White House, but its results
are said to be similar to other
surveys taken by Carter's personal
pollster. Pal CaddelL on American
Jewish altitudes towards Carter.
Carter's plummeting popularity
among Jews is not surprising But
what is extraordinary is the exteat.
The survey was reportedly taken
after the administration won the
Senate's approval for the
controversial Middle East aircraft
package sale, which was widely
perceived as a threat to Israel
because of advanced planes
included for Egypt and Saudi
Arabia.
The sources speculated that
several recent White House steps,
regarded as "pro-Israel,'' may have
beea designed as part of an effort
to improve Carter's standing
among American Jews.
In this category would be the
surprise approval of Israel's
request to sell Kfir fighters to
Taiwan, the granting of long
sought landing rights to El Al in
four additional U.S. cities, the visit
to Israel by Vice President Walter
Moodale. and the appointment of
Edward Sanders, a prominent
American Jewish leader, as a
senior Middle East adviser to the
president.
In addition, the sources said,
there has been some “movement”
in other longstanding areas of
concern to Israel The sources
indicated that this involved the
supply of military equipment.
Assimilation rises in Europe
JERUSALEM (JTA) Most of Europe’s Jewish communities
are overwhelmed by assimilation, and more than SO percent of the
Jews marry non-Jews.- Moshe Krone, bead of the World Zionist
Organization's Torah Education and Culture Department, said at
the WZO executive's weekly meeting.
Krone, who returned recently from a tour of Europe and the
U.S., reported of the “tragic situation” in dozens of Jewish
communities in smaller towns in Italy. West Germany. France and
other countries. He said be promised some of those communities
Jewish literature m various languages.
Begin on a tear!
“Part to me, part to you," Prime Minister Menachem Begin teds
the Knesset last week in answer to hi* own query about the
meaning of a territorial compromise, adding weight to his words by
tearing a sheet of paper ia two. (See Column page 4.)
