Met virtuoso Castel
set for Or VeShalom
by Jeanie Franco Hallem
When Nico Castel immigrated
to New York from Venezuela in
1948, the operatic hopeful
promised his friends tickets to the
Met. “Little did anyone know that
it would be twenty years,” laughs
the Portuguese native.
Castel, whose repertory includes
145 roles, will participate in Or
VeShalom's Friday night service
on May 4. The multi-lingual tenor
will sing selections from Sephardic
religious ritual. Following the
service, Castel will perform Ladino
and popular songs at an Oneg
Shabbat.
In Atlanta for two performances
with New York’s Metropolitan
Opera, Castel will sing “Don
Pasquale” with Beverly Sills on
May 3 and he’ll appear in the
“Dialogues of the Carmelites” on
May 5. Both performances begin
at 8 p.m. at the Civic Center.
Castel’s performance at Or
VeShalom was arranged by Sol
Beton.
According to "Opera News,”
“Castel has delved into Iberian and
Sephardic music and become quite
a specialist.”
Not surprising since his father
speaks 13 languages, even
Sanskrit, and his late mother, a
sabra, spoke eight.
"I inherited from my dad the
senie of being a perfectionist, and I
felt I couldn’t please myself as a
leading tenor. So I thought,
‘Perhaps if I do characterparts,
with my innate ability as an actor
and with my languages, I can
please myself better.”
And he did.
For him work is enjoyable. “1
won’t tell you I have hobbies. I
don’t have electric trains. But
wouldn’t it be wonderful if people
had as their hobby their metier' 1
With their own interest for their
job or profession they would be so
much better at it, so much happier.
I guess that’s the central thing
about my life—my favorite hobby
is my work.”
Part of his “hobby” includes
studying and recording Sephardic
music. Castel will personally
autograph copies of his recent
record, “Sefarad—the Sephardic
Tradition through Ladino Song,”
following his Friday evening
performance. Records are
available in the Or VeShalom
Synagogue gift shop.
While in Atlanta, Castel will be
entertained by several members of
Or VeShalom. Among those
entertaining are Mr. and Mrs. Sol
Beton, Mr. and Mrs. Dave
Landau, Mr and Mrs. Isaac Habif
and Rabbi and Mrs. Robert Ichay.
Serving on the host committee
for the Friday Sabbath Service are
Mr. and Mrs. Beton, Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Amato. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold
Zipperman, Mr. and Mrs. Landau,
Dr. Jack Rousso, and Mr. and
Mrs. Joe Soriano.
