Have I got an

How could two such staunch
adversaries such as Begin and
Sadat, who have despised,
“hated,” and condemned one
another for so many years,
suddenly become such affection
ate, warm, and “loving” friends.
Those of us who have angry
feelings towards others, almost
without exception, have
experienced hurt feelings, as well,
in our interactions or dealings with
them. And while feelings of hurt
and anger usually coexist within us
at a given time, the feeling of hurt,
sadness and emotional pain at
being wronged by another,

experienced at the hands of
another is usually a function of the
importance that other has to us,
and how much we need to be liked,
approved of, loved by, and last but
not least as far as the Arab-Israeli
conflicts are concerned, accepted
by them.
Therefore, it is not surprising to
me, from a psychological
perspective, to see such positive
feelings expressed between such
historical enemies. Having hurt
and angered one another so many
times, they “rejoice” in their, as
well as their countries’, need for
approval and acceptance being
met.

appears to get worse. Although I
love him very much, I am really
turned off, and publicly
embarrassed by his twitch. Is there
anything that can be done to cure
his twitch?
Yes! First of all, a twitch is a
form of a tic. There are many
different kinds of tics, such as
excessive eye-blinking, hair-
twirling, lip-licking, grimacing,
excessive and inappropriate head
movements, etc. Tics, for the most
part, when psychogenic in
etiology, are developed and
expressed unconsciously by the
individual for the “purpose” of
tension and anxiety reduction.
Although some of the body’s inner
tension is reduced in this manner,
it is usually far from successful.
Additionally, as is true in your
case, it can be a tremendous social
turn off to others.
There are a few psychological
procedures that have been
successful in treating tics. Most of
them tend to concentrate on either
assisting the individual on how to
feel less tense or anxious, perhaps
concentrating on the causes,
although doing so is not always
necessary, or in assisting the
individual on how to more
constructively deal with and
express his tensions. I prefer a
psychotherapeutic approach
which utilizes hypnosis for this
purpose.
‘Gefilte’ with history
THE SECRET OF THE
SA BBA TH FISH, by Ben Aronin.
illustrated by Shay Rieger,
unpaged, $5.95, Ages 5-p.
reviewed by Faith Powell
Every book, whether written for
a child or an adult, should be part
teacher, part entertainer.
Although “The Secret of the
Sabbath Fish” is a children’s book,
youngsters and their parents will
be amused and enlightened by Ben
Aronin’s mystical retelling of a
Jewish folktale.
The story traces the origins of an
all-time favorite Jewish food —
gefilte fish. A mysterious
fisherman sells a kind-hearted
widow, Tante Mashe, “the most
beautiful, gleaming fish" for the
two kopeks she had saved for the
poor.
With the instructions that “as
you prepare it think about what
has happened to the Jewish
people,” the strange fisherman
leaves Tante Mashe to make a
Sabbath feast for the poor.
Gefilte fish, so-called because it
is “filled with the history of our
people" is what Tante Mashe
creates through her remembering
the plight of the chosen people.
Used as a rcad-aloud book,
parents can combine the text and
the simple brushstroke illustra
tions to enhance the child’s
understanding and appreciation of
the Sabbath rituals by
incorporating this story with
activities in the home.
This is a tale of selflessness, love,
magic and fantasy aimed at the
young Jewish mind looking for
reasons and rhymes to familiar
traditions.
