“There are lots of me
that function alone and
together. I am a
collection of instru
ments that I use to
play different tunes.”
—Shari Lewis
opened, today she is not a member
of any Jewish organization. She
works actively, however, for the
state of Israel in her Beverly Hills,
C alif., community because “If I
don't do it, who will? Israel is the
source of power and survival for
Jews,” she said.
l ewis has never been to Israel,
but has relatives living there. Her
parents have traveled to Israel
twice. Her father will be a host at
the “International Festival of
Magic" to be held in Israel this
November.
Soft-spoken off-stage, Lewis is
proud of being Jewish. “I have a
great relationship with the
thousands of years that have come
down before,” she said. “I think of
Judah Maccabee as a cousin I like
a lot."
When in Iran in 1977 as the
American representative of the
International Child’s Fiim
Festival, Lewis’ Egyptian
counterpart approached her to ask
if she was Jewish. “I answered *yes,’
and he said, ‘I am Egyptian, can
we be friends?’"
A week later President Anwar
Sadat announced his peace
proposal plans and made his

historic flight to Jerusalem.
Lewis considers her practice of
religion a private matter. She never
adds a Jewish flavor to her acts,
saying “it is unacceptable, even in
humor."
Although Lewis’ family lives
scattered lives, they keep in
constant contact, something her
parents are thankful for. Her
father helps her write a column
which appears in newspapers in 67
cities throughout the world,
including most of the major cities
in Canada and the U S. and even
reaches Pretoria, South Africa.
Her mother helps with her
recent-found talent, guest
conductor of symphony
orchestras, what Lewis calls the
nicest relationship she has ever had
with people. It involves “working
with 90-110 super achievers who
just want to make you look good
because it makes them look good.”
Dr. Hurwitz still teaches his
bright-eyed daughter card tricks
and her mother makes sure her
gowns are the right length.
Lewis always makes time for her
immediate family — husband,
Jeremy Tarcher, a publisher who
specializes in books for laymen on
psychological, social and medical
self-help, and her 17-year-old
daughter, Mallory.
In addition to entertaining,
conducting and writing (having
published 15 books and coming
out with four more this year) Lewis
collects primitive art and likes
travelling to primitive places. She
serves as president of the American
Films Center for Children, is a
member of the national board of
Girl Scouts of America and the
International board of Boy Scouts
of America.
Describing herself, Lewis said,
“There are lots of me than function
alone and together. 1 am a
collection of instruments that 1 use
to play different tunes."
