Beersheba’s past reaches far
back, before the recorded period of
the Biblical patriarchs. A French
archaeologist uncovered intact a
chain of Chalcolithic subterranean
cave settlements along Wadi
Sheba, which borders the old
village to the south. A series of
deep, underground, egg-shaped
rooms, dug at a depth of 20feet or
more, were reached by vertical
shafts.
Now in a Beersheba museum are
the jewelry, figurines, ivory
sculptures, stone vessels unearthed
there, the remnants of a
civilization that flourished 1,500
years before the time of Abraham.
Based on tales recounted in the
Book of Genesis, Beersheba was a
distinct locality during the
Patriarchal age of the Bible. Isaac
and Jacob lived here. From
Beersheba Abraham took his own
son to the sacrificial rock at
Moriah, and when the Lord had
spared him the supreme sacrifice,
“they rose up and went together to
Beersheba.” Upon the Jews’ return
from Babylonian captivity in the
6th century BCE, Beersheba was
one of the towns where they
relocated.
The Well is at the foot of a slope
beside Hebron Road, where
tradition confirms that Abraham
made a pact with Abimelech, the
Philistine King, pledging they
would not harm each other.
Abraham gave him seven ewe
lambs, to seal the covenant. The
Well was subsequently known as
the Well of the Oath; Be’er donates
well and sheva signifies oath or
seven.

exist within a 20th century
framework. The Negev Institute for
Arid Zone Research is the nucleus
of pace-setting scientific
experiments. In progress is a
desalination procedure utilizing
electrodialysis; current is passed
through special membranes,
filtering salt from water Projects
involving cloud seeding and solar
energy are under way.
Ben Gurion University is
celebrated for its inventive
architecture and its more than 25
departments, including humani
ties, social and technical science,
and a medical school. Many of its
4,500 students live on campus, in
solar-cooled as well as solar-
heated dorms.
Tel Sheva, a Bedouin settlement
four miles northeast of town, is the
first of six planned communities
which may eventually house
12,000 tribesmen who are
foresaking the migratory
mystique. Although initially the
nomadic shepherds were reluctant
to accept modern government
housing, they concluded
apartments with baths are hard to
beat. In the beginning, many of the
former goat herders used their new
quarters for storage, and pitched a
tent out in back. These Bedouins
are friendly and loyal to Israel and
pay little attention to Arab
propaganda. A few who work in
the building trades have joined
Histadrut. They receive
workmen’s compensation and are
demanding cost of living increases.
Tribal chieftains no longer settle
tribal feuds. They seek justice in
Israeli courts.
In this land where the
incongruous becomes common
place, where camels may be
tethered a few hundred yards from
small planes on a runway, where
black goatskin tents are topped
with TV aerials, and a transitor
radio accompanies a shepherd on
his desert meanderings, no journey
is complete without the local tea-
party tent tour, or complete
Bedouin dinner, if you prefer.
For a moderate fee, guests can
arrange through the Beersheba
office of tourism, or Mr. A. Zakai,
75 Hechalutz Street, to visit an
Arab sheikh. Tiny cups of bitter
coffee and beakers of highly
sweetened tea are served, with a
background of Bedouin song and
an invitation to ride the host’s
camel. Parked conspicuously
nearby, his made-in-America
automobile is also ready to roll.
