Not the lone ranger
SafTan part of an elite group
Army Sergeant David B. SafTan
FORT LEWIS, Wash
(AHTNC)—To Army Sergeant
David B Saffan of Atlanta, being
a Ranger doesn’t mean putting out
forest fires or fighting outlaws on
the West Texas plains.
Saffan, son of Dr. and Mrs.
Benjamin D. Saffan, is a member
of an elite, rugged, and highly
trained fighting force at Fort
Lewis, Wash. They are known as
the Second Battalion, 75th
Rangers and the 600 plus members
are hand picked, almost always
work nights and go up to a week
with very little sleep. “I have the
toughest job in the Army both
mentally and physically,” said
Saffan.
As a Ranger, Saffan has to be
parachute qualified and train
constantly to hone his skills in
hand-to-hand combat, weapons,
stalking and tracking, and
mountaineering to name a few.
Each man is cross-skilled so he can
do his job and someone else’s.
Physical training is also high on
the list. Before breakfast, the
battalion often embarks on a ten
mile run. After breakfast, Saffan
might don his 110 pound pack,
which contains everything he owns
plus five days of food, and head
out on a 20-mile trek cross
country. It is a Ranger standard to
make it in eight hours or less. “It’s a
challenge to be in this battalion
day to day. Here the challenges
offered are both physically and
mentally demanding," he said.
Since jumping out of airplanes is
how Saffan and his fellow Rangers
get to where they are going, they
have no use for trucks or jeeps. The
entire battalion has only two
vehicles. At a moments notice,
Saffan could find himself being
loaded into an airplane and let out
over an isolated Arctic mountain
range, insect-infested jungle, or a
desolate desert. Rangers stay ready
and are on a six hour call-up
should they be needed anywhere in
the world.
Before Saffan was selected for
the battalion, he had to spend three
weeks in a pre-Ranger course.
These are three of the most
merciless and demanding weeks of
“hell” in the Army for some. It’s
here the battalion selects its future
Rangers. Some quit. Some are
weeded out for not being able to
come up to the stringent standards.
Each man is tested on his infantry
skills, determination, and
endurance. If he survives the test,
he is allowed to join the battalion.
Since the Rangers are voluntary, a
member can quit at anytime.
Saffan said that while the
discipline and physical training
were tough, he wouldn't have it
any other way. “I like the rigorous
and fulfilling outdoor adventure,”
he said.
Saffan, 23, is a 1973 graduate of
Brtarcliff High School, and joined
the Army in October 1976.
